SOLOMEN CAFE ~ The Lesser Known Japanese Cafe In SS2 Petaling Jaya

Going Back To Basics With
SOLOMEN CAFE
Going Back To Basics With SOLOMEN CAFE

As the saying goes, if the food is good, customers will come in droves. However, when a good restaurant is new to the F&B industry, it is a challenge to keep the momentum going. Well, during one of my 'Jalan Jalan Cari Makan' journey, exploring the treasure trove of eateries around SS2, Petaling Jaya, I discovered Solomen Cafe, a newly opened cafe while looking for a bite in this gem-filled neighbourhood.

Comforting & Hearty Japanese Cuisine
Solomen Cafe

Solomen Cafe serves a myriad of comforting and hearty Japanese cuisine focusing on simple ramen and don (rice) dishes with a good fare of appetizer, ala carte items and All-Day Set menu to choose from. They have gone for simple, fuss-free decor instead, letting their meals speak for itself.

SUKIYA Malaysia ~ Japan's No.1 Gyudon @Dataran Sunway Kota Damansara Petaling Jaya

A Quick Japanese Treat
Japan's No.1 GYUDON
SUKIYA Malaysia

Japan's Number 1 Fast Food Chain Store

SUKIYA, the leading Japanese GYUDON restaurant chain by number of locations has opened its door to Malaysian early last year. SUKIYA famous for their delicious beef bowl dishes has 1,980 restaurants in Japan, its home country.

Currently SUKIYA Malaysia has 5 outlets located at Taipan USJ, Uptown Damansara, Kota Damansara, IOI City Mall Putrajaya and Aeon Bandaraya Melaka. With prices as low as RM 8.40 per bowl of GYUDON beef rice, they are aiming to provide authentic Japanese dishes at fast, good and affordable cheap pricing to their Malaysian customers.

SUKIYA Malaysia proud of having Halal certification for their main signature dishes recently, hoping to attract more Muslim diners. SUKIYA Malaysia offers a selection of more than 15 dishes with different options such as Gyudon (Beef Rice), Teriyaki Chicken Rice, Chicken Curry, Teishoku (Set Meal) and the brand new Tokyo Ramen.

All these dishes are complemented with a variety of toppings such as spicy Ontama (half boiled egg), okra, Negitama (spring onion), cheese together with value set of side dishes like Kara-age, Seaweed salad, Seafood tofu and the healthy bites of Edamame.

Comfortable, No-Frills ~ Fast Food Dining Concept

Order & Payment Counter

SUKIYA Malaysia practises self-service dining concept at their 4 outlets, where diners will have to place their order at the cashier, pay and take their food tray to their table. With the exception of Uptown Damansara outlet as it was a smaller in size with waiter in service. Featuring a no-frills, friendly and casual ambiance, now tasty Japanese food shouldn't be hard to come by, made affordable and cheap for easy indulgence for any Japanese food lovers!

GYUDON Beef Rice
RM 6.40 (S), RM 8.40 (M), RM 10.40 (L)

Their best-selling item, SUKIYA's signature Gyudon Beef rice comes served with generous portion of tender and flavourful thinly sliced beef strips cooked with lots of onions. Japanese comfort food, Gyu牛 means beef and don丼 means rice bowl (with something on top), consists of a bowl of short-grained Japanese rice topped with a mildly sweet sauce flavoured beef and onion dish.

 GYUDON Beef Rice (M)

Premium Australian grain-fed beef was used, prepared and cooked every hour to maintain the freshness of the Gyudon dish. SUKIYA practises strict food quality control to maintain the taste and freshness, so regular batches are made regularly throughout the day in the kitchen.

I'm not a big fan of beef dishes, but this definitely made it into my favourite list. The flavours, texture of the beef and even the rice used made the dish into a comforting and addictive concoction and for once, I savoured it all. Real value-for-money, you simply cannot find beef rice at this price of RM 8.40 (Medium serving), a reasonable good portion to satisfy your hunger.

TERIYAKI Chicken Rice
RM 8.40 (M), RM 10.40 (L)

TERIYAKI Chicken Rice is another delectable option to try if you are not into beef. A juicy and well-marinated chicken thigh meat grilled to perfection with flavourful Japanese in house made teriyaki sauce, resting on top of the steaming white Japanese rice and served with chopped spring onions. I was delighted with the slightly salty and sweet flavour, not too sweet but just right for the taste buds.

The medium serving portion was just right for me but of course, big eaters can opt for the large serving to fill their big appetite.

 GYU-Curry (Seasoned Beef)
RM 12.40 (M), RM 14.40 (L)

Diners, who want something spicier, can try the restaurant's GYU-Curry (Seasoned Beef). A great tasting dish of two dishes of beef and chicken served with rice. I was in fact reluctant to try any Japanese curry as I never really enjoyed eating it.

But Sukiya's version of chicken curry begs to differ. I was told that they fine-tuned it to suit Malaysian flavour with a mixed of spices such as cumin, turmeric, coriander, clove among others making it into a very delicious Japanese fusion curry Malaysian would loved.

Most who have tried Japanese curry will find it slightly sweet and not too spicy, but the version served at Sukiya Malaysia is attuned to the Malaysian palate. They knows Malaysians love their curry and hope to attract more diners with this special chicken curry. Well-executed dish, now I loves eating Sukiya's curry dishes!

 Triple Cheese GYUDON
RM 8.40 (S), RM 10.40 (M), RM 12.40 (L)

Sukiya Malaysia also serves up some pretty good cheese rice dishes like the Triple Cheese GYUDON. Cheese-lovers should try out this cheesy dish which comprises a mixed of three types of cheese; cheddar, mozzarella and red cheddar topping the GYUDON Beef Rice.

The flavours were rich and they were generous with the cheese. Topped with the beef strips and cheese, the rice sure hit the right spots. Give it a good stir and mix before savouring all-in-one delicious spoonful of  the beefy and cheesy goodness.

TOKYO Ramen (with Chicken)
RM 8.40

Besides their signature GYUDON Beef Rice and Teriyaki Chicken Rice dishes, SUKIYA Malaysia introduced TOKYO Ramen dishes in their menu too. The ramen stock is basically a chicken shoyu broth, boiled for many hours with chicken. Sukiya's ramen are freshly made daily with 6 days delivery from their centralised kitchen. Comes served with poached chicken thigh and chopped spring onions.

I like the texture of their ramen but not the taste. It has a mild boric acid (kan sui) taste to it that I dislike most in noodles. As for the broth, it was on the saltier side but that was my personal preference. Well, not everyone can possibly always enjoy the same food as everyone else. And yet our tastes vary so much and so passionately. You may enjoy it all ~ with the ramen and broth, it might goes well with your palate!

GYUDON Seaweed Salad Set
RM 11.90 (S), RM 13.90 (M), RM 15.90 (L)

You can indulge in your mouth watering Japanese fare ala-carte style or order your Value Set for a more complete, filling and satisfying meal. Choose from 4 choices such as the Kara-age Set, Seaweed salad Set, Seafood tofu Set and the healthy bites of Edamame Set. All the Value Sets comes with your choice of drink and a bowl of miso soup. You can quench your thirst choosing from Coca-Cola, Sprite, Fanta Orange, Iced lemon tea and Iced Green tea as well.

Ramen Ten & Shin Tokyo Sushi @Jaya 33 Section 13 Petaling Jaya

Ramen Ten
 Shin Tokyo Sushi
A Ramen & Sushi Fare By Design

Ramen Ten, which literally translates into 'Noodle Shop' in Japanese, was established back in 2002 with an outlet in Far East Plaza, Singapore, which is the 1st Halal Japanese Restaurant certified by Majlis Ulama Islam Singapura (MUIS) in Singapore. Since gracing its presence in Malaysia back in 2013 in Jaya 33, Ramen Ten features around 10  types of Ramen in the menu and created the 1st of its kind 'Dry Ramen' in Singapore and Malaysia.

With its first establishment based in Jaya 33 Petaling Jaya, Ramen Ten has expanded and launched to four other outlets across the Klang Valley namely at Ikano Power Centre, KLIA2, Seremban 2, and Cyberjaya.

Ramen Ten boasts of being the first ramen establishment serving their signature dish of  'Dry Ramen', 1st of its kind in Malaysia and Singapore.

Ramen Ten &  Shin Tokyo Sushi director Ivy Yuen said that under the new direction of the new management team, they have revamped its menu, featuring the pre-loved improved delicacies and introducing new cuisines to entice its diners.

The dishes were carefully crafted to cater to the discerning palates of loyal fans and local foodies. New menu dishes that comes in combinations of several set menu with a variety mixed of sashimi, noodles, rice, tempura, teriyaki, temaki, chawanmushi and miso soup all thrown into the appetizing and value-for-money set.

Back in 2008, Ramen Ten expanded its store section by introducing Shin Tokyo Sushi that translates to 'New Tokyo Sushi' in Japanese. Shin Tokyo was created and adopted the concept of serving a fusion of a variety of Japanese Sushi that includes the creation of 'Spicy Sushi Range' served on conveyor belts.

Refreshing: Soft Shell Crab To Salmon Skin Salad
RM 23.90

In starter featuring Soft Shell Crab To Salmon Skin Salad. Fresh iceberg lettuce and green coral salad with deep fried whole soft shell crab, crispy salmon skin, cherry tomatoes, carrots topped with a creamy runny house made Ni Tamago (Japanese lava egg).

Freshly house made sesame sauce gives it a refreshing taste while the crispy salmon skin gives the crunch for this appetizing salad.

What's good is that the sesame sauce are left for us to drizzle over our salad so that the sauce will not soak and soften the crispy soft shell crab. Pour it over as much as you like, mix it up and munch through the fresh salad with the smooth and creamy sesame sauce.

I enjoyed this salad for its freshness of the greens, fragrant sesame sauce, the nice little bits of crispy salmon skin and most of all, the generous serving of a whole soft shell crab for us to savour!

Santen Sashimi Moriawase
RM 33.90

Sashimi lovers can indulge themselves with Ramen Ten's Sashimi Platter of Santen Sashimi Moriawase. Freshest catch of favourite sashimi which include Salmon, Salmon Belly and Tuna (Maguro) is offered on a combination platter so that diners can try several different types of sashimi at once.

My favourite among the three is the melt-in-the-mouth Salmon Belly. The fish's freshness was evident in each slice of the sashimi servings. See the little wasabi made to look like a flower bud placing on the platter with the sashimi. How creative!

Oh, here are the little cute handmade crafts from radish and carrot ~ pretty and delicate butterfly used to decorate the premium cuts of the Santen Sashimi Moriawase.

Chicken Teriyaki Dry Ramen
RM 16.90

Next is Ramen Ten's specialty dish you can never find anywhere else in others ramen shops. Great tasting ramen skill fully cooked to the right texture, not too soft nor too hard with just the right springiness are mixed with house made teriyaki sauce. Well-marinated and juicy grilled chicken thigh meat resting on top of the ramen, served with julienne fresh lettuce, carrot and chopped scallion.

I like the fact that Ramen Ten uses the perfect chicken part for its teriyaki chicken ~ the thigh. Chicken lover like me is won over by the heavenly taste of the savoury teriyaki chicken. Truly a winner, definitely the best dry ramen I had that day.

I was told that they get fresh supply of ramen on a weekly basis, so you can be rest assured of great-tasting fresh made ramen each time you come by for your dose of ramen noodles!

Juicy and tender looking teriyaki chicken makes you wanna jump in to eat, ya!

One last tasty-looking shot of the Chicken Teriyaki Dry Ramen, yummy!

Chicken Teriyaki Don Set
RM 17.90

Another great offering of the similar delicious Teriyaki Chicken.  Chicken Teriyaki Don Set comes served with three tasty appetizers, mini salad, miso soup and half a Ni Tamago (Lava egg). Grilled chunky pieces of grilled chicken resting a bed of Japanese steamed rice drizzled with teriyaki sauce completes the whole rice/don set.

Fresh Green Salad in Wafu Dressing

Mini Platter of Deep Fried Popiah, Pickled cucumber & Tofu

Tom Yum Chicken Katsu Ramen
RM 22.05

Highly recommended ~ Must Try dish if you like fusion Japanese food. Tom yum fans can try out the robust flavour Tom Yum Chicken Katsu Ramen, topped with a half tamago lava egg, lime. nori sheets, chopped scallion and some bean sprout/julienne carrots for added crunch. The gorgeous thick tom yam broth is ultimately the best ramen to start with if you love spicy food.

 Chicken Katsu

The Chicken Katsu which simply means  breaded, deep-fried Japanese style fried chicken should not be mistaken as another typical fast food but an excellent complement with the ramen dish.

Ramen Ten's Tom Yum Ramen is a joy to savour, especially when the spicy and sourish flavour kicks off on the tongue while you slurp the soup, while you enjoy the springy texture of the ramen, personally cooked by experienced chef Kalvin Tay himself.

My son loved it so much that he downed 2 bowl of the creamy and fragrant tom yum ramen just to satisfy his craving, respect!

Deluxe Combo Set
RM 28.90

Complete Set of 9 Tasty Food Items

Diners, who are looking for a more variety of Japanese dishes at one sitting, can try out Ramen Ten's sole Deluxe Combo Set. This set serves up some pretty good selection and if you want a slice of everything, try the new combo set, which comprises of sashimi, noodles, rice, chawanmushi, tempura, california roll, miso soup, salad and fruits.

Fresh Salmon Sashimi, Mini Tempura, Chawanmushi, Udon, Mini Salad, California Temaki
( From Top Left Clockwise )

You will enjoy eating the mini tempura as it maintains its crispiness long after our 'Camera Eats Session'. Well fried and lightly coated with the tempura flour. Sometimes I dislike eating those that are too heavily coated with a thick layer till you cannot even distinguish what types of vegetable we are eaten till we bite into it.

Garlic Fried Rice

 Tuna Mayo Roll
RM 16.90

Chef Kalvin's creation from Shin Tokyo Sushi for us was this Tuna Mayo Roll. Bright and cheery orange-looking sushi rice wrap with tasty fillings of sushi tamago, fresh Japanese cucumber. The appetizing sushi gets tastier being coated with ebiko and creatively topped with home made tuna mayo drenched with tasty house made teriyaki sauce for the added flavour.

Resting a bed of mayo dressing, these detectable little morsels of tuna mayo, sushi tamago (egg), Japanese cucumber and ebiko all wrap fresh with Japanese rice will bound to win over your taste buds. Absolutely a simple yet delicious sushi dish for sushi lovers!

 Asari Butter Soup
RM 11.90

Another great-tasting Clam Soup from Ramen Ten. You could taste the seafood goodness in the mildly flavoured broth. The butter goes very well with fresh clam resulting in a delicious stock with natural goodness and flavour. Serving portion is around 10 pieces of clams, just good enough for 1 pax.

 Chuka Santen Moriawase
RM 15.90

Ramen aside, Ramen Ten also serve side dishes such as Chuka Santen Moriawase. Combination of 3 types of sides bites of Chuka Iidako (Seasoned Baby Octopus), Chuka Kurage (Seasoned Jellyfish) and Chuka Sazae  (Seasoned Snail).

A Close Shot of Chuka Sazae
 (Seasoned Snail)

Healthy Bites: Edamame
RM 4.90

 Matcha Milk Shake
RM 17.90

No Japanese meal is complete without their Matcha desserts. If you are a fan of  Matcha ice cream, you will not be disappointed. chef Kalvin served  Matcha Milk Shake ~ The tall glass was filled with blended house made Matcha ice cream and whipping cream topped with soft serve vanilla ice cream and garnished with house made azuki (red bean paste) and matcha powder for the added green paste flavour.
