Perfect Plate Of Char Siew Wan Tan Mee
Wantan Mee is a well-loved Malaysian hawker dish. This noodle treat tossed up in black soya sauce is easily found in any food court or Kopitiam throughout the country. A plate of dry-style wantan noodles seems simple enough, with some egg noodles tossed in aromatic black soya sauce with lard oil and served with wantan soup dumplings. To complete the presentation, pieces of Char Siew (BBQ Pork Belly) or Siew Yok (Roast Pork Belly) are placed on top.
But a plate of this popular hawker treat is difficult to find, as not all elements often come together in perfect unison. Trust me—I've long been a Wantan noodles foodie for over four decades!

Restoran Yulek Wan Tan Mee In Taman Cheras
For me, Restoran Yulek Wan Tan Mee in Taman Cheras has all the ingredients you want in wantan mee. They have been around for decades, since 1983, operating from a stall relocated from Meng Shiang coffee shop.
It's a family business run by a mother-daughter team. Many years ago, they started with a small stall, and in 2014, they finally owned their own shop at RESTORAN YULEK Wan Tan Mee. Be prepared to wait for seats, as it can get crowded even on weekdays during the breakfast and lunch hours.
Business hours are as early as 7:45am till 4pm, and they closed on Tuesday. To remember when they closed for business, the owner's daughter told me, "Hi, just remember my name is 'Ah Yee,' so we are closed on Tuesday la!" The word 'Yee 'Means two in Cantonese, so if you remember her name, they are closed every Tuesday!
Their dish serving is easily one of the best in town. Serving the best Char Siew in Cheras and one of the most generous wan tan mee I can find in Klang Valley. The portion of the Char Siew given is almost close to half of the plate!
A standard Char Siew Wantan mee bowl with dumplings soup costs RM 7.50. The noodles are fine, retaining their springy texture and taste. The chunky slices of Char Siew, aromatic black soya sauce with blanched choy sum, complete the dish. At RM 7.50, this is definitely worth the price you are paying for! 👍👍👍
Char Siew lovers like me will also go for the Char Siew Wan Tan Mee. I like mine, the leaner meat with the charred bits and the aromatic burnt parts.
The quality of the Char Siew is far better than that of many regular wan tan mee stalls. The meats served here are all housemade, roasted, or barbequed in-house to perfection. The meat is succulent, and I like the smokey, sweet crust on it.
In-House Roasted Char Siew, Char Siew Ribs & Roast Pork (Siew Yok)
If you enjoy the fatty part of the Char Siew, when ordering, do request and ask for the 'Pun Fei Sau' parts. This literally means the pork belly of half fat and half lean for the melt-in-the-mouth sensation. So yummy!
To complement the delicious wan tan mee, the homemade green chilies in vinegar are a must-have. I loved having my wan tan mee with freshly made green chilies, which are crunchy, not soft in texture, and have a mild sourish flavour.
The shop also has plenty of variations to choose from, including Siew Yok (Roast Pork), Braised Chicken feet, Pai Kuat (BBQ Pork Ribs), apart from the ever-popular Char Siew (BBQ Pork Belly).
Deep-Fried Wantans
While waiting for your noodles, you can also munch on fried wantans. I have to say that their deep-fried wanton was just average for me, nothing to shout about as I have eaten far better, meatier versions elsewhere.
Local Iced Coffee
Expect no frills from Restoran YULEK Wan Tan Mee, as it's only a simple Kopitiam-style set-up, but it is definitely worth the visit. Located nearby the Taman Cheras morning market, it can get very crowded. My advice is to go after the market-goers are done shopping. Finding a parking spot can be tricky but certainly not impossible.
YULEK Wan Tan Mee 友力云吞面 in Taman Cheras, Kuala Lumpur, will always be one of my favorite haunts when I'm craving springy wanton noodles with tasty meat variations in town. Their generous serving of Char Siew is also something I look forward to every time I dine there!
