Rail Canteen's concept is reminiscent of the famous old train station design with traditional sense of decor, filled with memorabilia from the past era. The dining environment of Rail Canteen's also brought back nostalgia with items we used to see in the olden days, creating a different kind of ambience.
Dining at Rail Canteen lets you soaked in the relaxing and cosy atmosphere while enjoying some of Malaysian best local food. Wholesome, hearty meals eaten with friends or family in a cosy environment are kind of rare these days as more and more restaurants strive to achieve a hip and happening ambience.
Typical Malaysian Breakfast ~ Kaya & Butter Toast with Kopi
With a selection of homely brunch fare served all day and a cosy setting, Rail Canteen is perfect for a quiet meal if you're looking for a change of pace from the hustle and bustle of the city. Their menu are kept simple with time-honoured recipes such as sambal, kaya and coffee coming from the central kitchen in Kluang, which supplies the original canteen and Kluang Rail Coffee outlets.
Kopi O (Dark Coffee)
Start off your dining experience with a hot glass mug of aromatic Kluang Station Coffee. Made from 100% local coffee beans, I was told that the coffee beans are sourced locally from small town, Chamek where they are roasted to perfection in the most traditional way with sugar and butter. There are even conveniently packed coffee bags sold in a packet of 20 sachets for customers to savour a hot cup of authentic Kluang Rail Coffee at the comfort of their house.
Kopi Chendol Ais
But if you're adventurous, do try out this wonderful creation of Kopi Chendol Ais, a tasty concoction made out of three ingredients. A bitter and sweet mixture of chendol, coconut milk (santan) and black coffee will surely delight any curious coffee drinkers for the first time. This delighful drink has layers of flavours unfolding with each sips, bet you will enjoy it to bits!
Roti Bakar
Another must-try is their Roti Bakar, a simple roti benggali charcoal-toasted to perfection, spread with butter and kaya is my kind Malaysian breakfast to have for a great start of the day. Eating this simple crispy and sweet toast reminds me of my younger days, reminiscent of my time growing up in Chinatown where my family and I used to have our mid-day snack at an old coffee shop of Nam Heong Restaurant at Jalan Sultan in Kuala Lumpur.
Bun Bakar
Well, you are not too keen to try out the Roti Bakar, then you can always opt for the Bun Bakar instead. A round sweet bun lightly charcoal-toasted for a crisper texture, generously slathered with butter and kaya to complete the perfect Malaysian snack of all time.
Bun Sambal Special
Fans of sambal should try lip-smacking Bun Sambal Special ~ charcoal toasted sweet bun served with Rail Canteen's special sambal and shredded cucumber for the added crunch. Good and fresh tasting savoury bun to try if you like spicy food.
Nasi Lemak With Ayam Goreng Berempah
In a country where nasi lemak is a staple dish for many Malaysians and foreigners alike, it is sometimes not easy to find a nasi lemak joints that hits all the right buttons. From street vendors and kopitiam to restaurants that specialise in the delicacy, each one boasts its own unique flavours.
Rail Canteen's version of nasi lemak fares pretty good in my books. They aced the two most important ingredients in the making of a good nasi lemak which is the fragrant coconut rice (nasi lemak) as well as the sambal. At RM 12.50 per serving, you get a piece of ayam goreng berempah (fried chicken seasoned with spices) with usual condiments of hardboiled egg, anchovies (ikan bilis), peanuts, cucumbers and extra 2 choices of sambal to go with the dish.
Indulge in this ever-popular nasi lemak signature dish to enjoy the juicy, well-marinated and freshly fried to crisp perfection whole chicken thigh while having an option to choose from not one but 5 different choices of sambal to go with the nasi lemak.
Extra Sambal
RM 2.50 Per Serving
I was pleasantly surprised to find that they have so many sambals to choose from. Nasi lemak lovers will definitely be spoilt with choice choosing from sambal udang (shrimps), sambal sotong (squids), sambal kerang (cockles), sambal bawang (onions) and sambal ikan bilis (anchovies)!
Me for once, just simply cannot resist not ordering 2 but all 5 sambals to eat with my fragrant nasi lemak this time around. I have not preference for any but loves them all, for the rich sambal sauce gives the nasi lemak it's lip-smacking goodness.
Meehoon Siam
Rail Canteen's Meehoon Siam is basically a simple version of Siamese noodles of flavourful vermicelli noodles served with various toppings including fried shallots, shredded lettuce, shredded omelette with sides of hardboiled egg, cucumber slice. lime and sambal. Do remember to squeeze in some lime juice for the extra zest to enhance the flavour.
Meehoon Siam With Kambing Rendang
Kambing Rendang
Diners can also have some Kambing Rendang to go with the Meehoon Siam for a more fulfilling meal at Rail Canteen. Chunky pieces of mutton cooked in a mixture of rich herbs which was really tender and flavourful. Gravy was positively thick and appetising, with enough spiciness to go with meehoon, mee or perfect with rice too.
Hainanese Chicken Chop
Apart from the spicy dishes, diners can check out their Hainanese Chicken Chop; a hearty and comforting meal of breaded deep-fried chicken thigh, delightfully crispy on the outside but juicy on the inside and served with generous portion of tomato based gravy, grilled tomato, baked beans, coleslaws and fries.
Each bite is a delicious crunch of tender chicken, delectable even without sauce. Good idea for the sauce to be served separately, so that it would not soak the crispy chicken skin and consequently alter the dish original taste. So I'd say chicken chop is worth your go!
Spaghetti Rendang Kambing
Fusion food at its best being presented in their Spaghetti Rendang Kambing, a mouthwatering and irresistible pasta dish especially created for mutton lovers. A marriage of local and western cuisines, combination of the spicy and aromatic mutton rendang with rich sauce that goes well with the bland taste of the spaghetti; as it add more oomph to your meal.
Mee Rebus
If you are a diehard fan of yellow noodles (mee) and not rice, Rail Canteen's Mee Rebus could be a good choice for you. It's yellow noodles served with a thick spicy potato-based gravy and garnished with a hard-boiled egg, fried shallots, tau kwa (fried beancurd), green chillies and lime juice. The gravy is thick and rich with a hint of sourness from the tamarind paste and lime juice.
It would be better if they topped it up with some crispy cucur udang and bawang (prawn and onion fritters) as I think makes a great accompaniment as the fritters soak up all that wonderful gravy. Another great addition is sambal, which adds an extra ‘kick’ to the dish.
