When it comes to local noodle dishes in Kuala Lumpur, staples like Hokkien Mee and Cantonese-style Noodles or "Kong Fu Fun" dominate the scene. But during a recent food hunt, my husband was hit with a serious craving for a noodle dish that is becoming incredibly rare, almost bordering on extinct in the Klang Valley: Hainan Mee (海南面 / "Hoi Lam Meen").

If you haven't heard of it, you aren't alone—but mention it to your parents or grandparents, and watch their eyes light up with nostalgic memories. Very few stalls in town still preserve this recipe, but we successfully tracked down a legendary master of it at CHERAS No Signboard Hokkien Mee 【无招牌福建面】.

From Menara PGRM to a Hidden Back Alley
Regular foodies might remember this stall from its previous incarnation, when it famously operated late into the night right next to the petrol station in front of the PGRM Tower (Menara PGRM). Today, they have relocated just down the road, operating from the outside of a back-alley shop lot called Restoran Zang Kee (生记茶餐室) in Cheras.

The kitchen is helmed by Chef Yong, a veteran cook with over 30 years of culinary experience under his belt, including a past tenure as a chef at Kam Lun Tai.

The Star of the Show: Hainan Noodles (RM 11)

We placed our order for the elusive Hainan Mee, and it did not disappoint. For just RM 11, the single portion arrived in a massive size that could easily satisfy two moderately hungry people.

Chef Yong uses thick yellow noodles, generously loaded with tender slices of pork. The dish is drenched in a deeply savory gravy that carries a profound wok hei aroma, and it's generously finished off with a beautiful, airy blanket of crispy deep-fried egg.

The combination of textures—the thick noodles soaking up the rich gravy paired with the crunch of the egg—is phenomenal. You'd be hard-pressed to find a better version in town.

The Old-School Classic: Charcoal Hokkien Mee
While you are there, it is mandatory to order their core signature dish: the traditional, charcoal-fried Hokkien Mee. Cooking over charcoal allows for an intense, evenly distributed high heat that imparts a distinct smoky finish you simply cannot replicate on a standard gas stove.

The noodles are heavily coated in a rich, dark, glossy soy sauce mixture and loaded with perfectly rendered, exceptionally crisp chunks of fried pork lard (chu yau char). It is savory, sinful, and exactly how old-school Hokkien Mee ought to taste.

The Verdict
If you want to taste a piece of fading Malaysian culinary history or are simply chasing down the best charcoal-fried noodles in town, Cheras No Signboard Hokkien Mee is well worth navigating the back alleys for.
