Sekinchan's Paddy Views
Breathtaking, Vibrant Green, & Golden-Hued Landscapes
Sunset View By The Seafood Restaurant In Kuala Selangor At Kedai Makanan Laut Kuala Sungai
When you think of a road trip to Sekinchan, your mind probably goes straight to the endless green paddy fields and the iconic sunset views at Pantai Redang. But as a hardcore foodie, I know the real charm of this bustling fishing village lies deep within its local eateries.
On our recent family day trip straight from Kuala Lumpur, our very first lunch pitstop was a fantastic neighborhood gem: Restoran Ka Lok (嘉乐茶餐室-清蒸鱼头).
Located right in the heart of Pekan Sekinchan, this unpretentious, father-and-son-run coffee shop is highly celebrated by locals for its fresh catches and comforting, home-style cooking. The setting is completely no-frills, but the incredible quality and value of the food blew us away.
Our total bill came to just RM 163 for 3 seafood dishes and 1 vegetable dish—an absolute steal for a hearty seafood feast!
What We Ordered:
1. Giant Grouper Sekinchan Steam (RM 85)
Restoran Ka Lok is renowned for its signature steamed fish heads, but we couldn't resist ordering the premium Giant Grouper. It was steamed to absolute perfection. The meat was thick, incredibly tender, gelatinous, and clean-tasting, perfectly highlighting the natural sweetness of a fresh coastal catch.
2. Spicy Taucu Dogfish Shark (RM 35)
If you visit Sekinchan, trying shark meat is a must! While it’s featured on various local menus in the form of porridge or soup, it is surprisingly rare to find fresh shark meat back in the Klang Valley unless you know specific traditional Teochew outlets.
We had the Dogfish Shark stir-fried with spicy taucu (fermented bean paste). The meat itself is a delicacy—flaky, firm, white, and mild. Paired with the sauce's savory heat, it packed the perfect punch of flavor.
3. Kung Po Squid (RM 25)
You can easily tell the difference when squid is fresh from the boats. This dish was fantastic—the squid was juicy, snappy, and coated in a gorgeous, glossy Kung Po glaze that had just the right amount of smoky sweetness.
4. Stir-Fry Baby Spinach (RM 8)
To balance out our rich seafood spread, we added a simple plate of stir-fried baby spinach. It was vibrant and garlicky, and it hit the spot perfectly. (Note: Rice is charged at RM 1.50 per portion).
The Verdict:
For seafood enthusiasts seeking an authentic, delicious, and highly affordable dining experience, Restoran Ka Lok is a must-visit on your Sekinchan itinerary. You get to indulge in premium, high-quality seafood and rare local delicacies without breaking the bank. I highly recommend making this your first stop when you arrive in town!
