Every great family road trip deserves a memorable finale. After an incredible day exploring the hidden gems and local wholesalers of Sekinchan, we began our journey back toward Kuala Lumpur. However, we couldn't resist making one final stop in Pasir Penambang, Kuala Selangor, for an early riverside dinner.

We pulled up to Kedai Makanan Laut Kuala Sungai (Ah Yu) Restaurant, an established local favorite celebrated for its fresh catches and spectacular vantage point right along the banks of the Selangor River.

Arriving in the early evening allowed us to catch the golden hour. Watching the sun slowly dip below the horizon while a cool river breeze drifts through the dining area completely sets the mood for a relaxed family meal.

Our total bill came to RM 271 for 5 dishes with rice and tea, which offered outstanding value for the quality and setting.

Our Seafood Dinner Breakdown:

Sweet & Sour Crabs

Sweet & Sour Crabs ~ We opted for Mud Crabs cooked in a classic sweet-and-sour sauce, and it was a stellar decision. Priced competitively at RM 88 per kg, the crabs were remarkably meaty, dense, and naturally sweet. 

The thick, balanced sauce was absolutely perfect for soaking up with sliced buns.

Tom Yam Senangin Fish

Tom Yam Senangin Fish ~ This dish was easily my personal favorite of the night. Priced affordably at RM 8 per 100 grams, the Senangin fish was incredibly fresh with clean, delicate white flesh. Cooked beautifully in a sharp, aromatic Tom Yam broth, the soup elevated the natural seafood flavors without overpowering the fish itself.

Cockles with Thai Green Chili Sauce

Cockles with Thai Green Chili Sauce ~ For a true taste of coastal dining, you can't go wrong with freshly poached cockles. They arrived plump and perfectly clean. When dipped into their punchy, homemade Thai green chili sauce, it became an instantly addictive snack at the table.

Thai-Style Jellyfish

Thai-Style Jellyfish ~ This dish was just average for my personal palate. I found the dressing a bit too aggressively sour, and jellyfish isn't typically my go-to order. However, if you are a fan of cold, crunchy jellyfish salads, it's a solid portion to share.

Bitter Gourd Scrambled Egg

Bitter Gourd Scrambled Egg ~ This is flagged as a signature recommendation on their menu. While it was a comforting addition to the meal, it felt relatively simple—essentially thinly sliced bitter gourd cooked with a generous amount of fluffy scrambled eggs, resting on a pool of light soy sauce. It's an authentic local preparation, though it didn’t quite stand out against the bold seafood dishes.

The Final Verdict

Dining at Kedai Makanan Laut Kuala Sungai is as much an aesthetic experience as it is a culinary one. It serves as the perfect intermission before the long drive back to the city. If you are anywhere near Kuala Selangor, I highly recommend planning your itinerary to hit this spot just as the sun begins to set.
