NASI LEMAK MOON CAKE

This Nasi Lemak Mooncake was created by HYT Food Industries for its pastry brand, Casahana. In conjunction with the Mid-Autumn Festival 2018, they decided to create a Malaysian-inspired mooncake giving a new twist to the traditional Chinese pastry.

Hence, the idea was mooted based on our much-beloved nasi lemak, so everyone especially the nasi lemak lovers can get to savour the delicious notes of savoury spicy sambal encased with lotus paste infused with fragrant coconut milk providing a mild and sweet fusion to excite your senses.

NASI LEMAK ICE CREAM

Everyone loves ice cream and Malaysians love their nasi lemak. Early last year, cafe owner of Skream Softserve, Kedah-based Melissa Tan Chia Hui released her one and only nasi lemak ice-cream. Her creation was sold for RM10 each and has become a hit among fellow Malaysians.

She took an entire three months to come up with the "perfect" nasi lemak flavour. Using lemongrass and coconut milk to make the ice-cream, and sprinkles typical nasi lemak condiments - peanuts, anchovies, sambal, eggs and cucumber - over it.

MCDONALD'S
NASI LEMAK BURGER
Inspired by the irresistibly familiar taste of our nation's pride,  McDonald's released the Nasi Lemak Burger in April this year. The juicy chicken thigh patty, a star ingredient of the burger. It's rich in aromatic coconut flavours and coated with cornflakes crunch for an extra crispy finish.

Served between lightly toasted semolina buns, the chicken thigh patty is layered with a golden fried egg, a bed of caramelised onions, crunchy cucumber slices, and paired with a dash of sweet yet spicy sambal sauce for that extra zing. All between lightly toasted roti. Mesti Sedap Gila ~ this was a winner with many of the McDonald's fans!

MY BURGERLAB
NASI LEMAK BURGER

The innovative and ambitious founders of the local burger joint, BurgerLab rose to the challenge and created their own interpretation: the Nasi Lemak Ayam Rendang Burger. This was launch in August last year after weeks of hearing about McDonald’s Singapore launching the Nasi Lemak Burger.

The BurgerLab version of the Nasi Lemak Burger features the main filling with a Thai-style fried chicken that’s topped with a rendang sauce bringing out the santan flavour, crunchy ikan bilis and, of course, a fried egg. Oh yes, the people at BurgerLab said that they never liked the limp, lifeless cucumber in typical nasi lemak bungkus, so here they use kyuri (Japanese cucumber) and pickle it to give their burger an extra zing. Well, this Nasi Lemak Ayam Rendang burger promises to be as satiating as it is a mouthful to say.

NASI LEMAK PANCAKE
Any pancake lovers out there? Next, we had the Nasi Lemak Pancake by Pancake House International, the famous pancake restaurant in Klang Valley. 'Truly Malaysian Nasi Lemak Pancake' in conjunction with the celebration of Merdeka Day and Malaysia Day for this year.

Since they are synonymous with serving amazingly tasty light and fluffy pancake, their version of nasi lemak comes with two slices of pandan-flavoured pancakes instead of coconut milk (santan) rice, sandwiched in between spicy sambal and sliced cucumbers. Served with fried chicken, sunny side up, fried ikan bilis, peanuts with pandan-flavoured pancakes, they aced in the good-tasting sambal that goes well with the savoury pancakes!

NASI LEMAK SHAKER
There's also the 'Nasi Lemak Shake' from Pancake House.  A great accompaniment to the Nasi Lemak Pancake for its rich and creamy flavour made from a concoction of pure coconut milk with its flavour enhanced with spicy cayenne and savoury deep-fried ikan bilis.

Nasi lemak lovers will definitely enjoy the sweet and fragrant pandan syrup added to the drink topped with crispy ikan bilis and peanuts for the extra kick!

Nasi lemak lovers, come meet the Nasi Lemak Cake! This delicious-looking savoury was created at Tiana Kitchen, run by 27-year-old Jennifer Yap and her mother Tatiana, 46, home-based caterers who set up shop in Damansara in 2016.

Jennifer added that all ingredients for their cakes are made from scratch and do not contain any artificial flavouring, colouring, or preservatives. Each nasi lemak cake is made with a nasi lemak base and layered with hard-boiled eggs before being topped off with a spread of sambal and a selection of garnishing. To keep everything in place, the cake is tied with a cucumber "belt" border.

Well, there you are - my compilation of the interesting Nasi Lemak inspired creations to honour Malaysia national dish.  I shall be updating this post from time to time once I heard of another wacky creation of the nasi lemak version dish that caught my attention. If you are drooling by now - go get yourself a nasi lemak bungkus from your favourite makcik or pakcik stall!
