Let me explain... You see, Nasi Lemak Ong is a pretty famous NASI KANDAR joint in Alor Setar, Kedah. If you ask anyone in Alor Setar where the best Chinese nasi lemak is in town, and you would probably be directed to the Nasi Lemak Ong in Jalan Kampung Perak. The locals folk actually referred the 'Nasi Kandar' as 'Nasi Lemak' in Alor Setar!

Nasi Lemak Ong is touted as the BEST NASI KANDAR in Alor Setar, famed for their coconut milk-free rice and curries. With this in mind, 'Nasi Kandar' foodies get to indulge in the mouth-watering curries totally guilt-free.

The founder, Mr Ong Kee Tea learnt his trade from a veteran Indian-Muslim chef who taught him the know-how of cooking the authentic famed 'nasi kandar'. After some years he learnt and refined the recipe, he is now owned a shop by selling his own Nasi Lemak. Combining Chinese, Malay and Indian flavours, Nasi Lemak Ong has been around for the past 21 years.

From a modest kitchen in the small town of Alor Setar, Kedah, Mr Ong has been serving authentic Malaysian curries since 1997. His sons, the Ong brothers, are no strangers to these homemade flavours.

The Ong's Family Heritage Recipe

Aspiring to keep Nasi Lemak Ong's legacy alive, the Ong brothers have now expanded to Kuala Lumpur, bringing with them the family heritage business and traditional know-how in a modern day setting right in the heart of Klang Valley - Pavilion Elite in Bukit Bintang now.

What makes them special is that their curries and gravies remain thick and spicy, even without the presence of coconut milk (santan). Dining at Nasi Lemak Ong, you will discover that the curries dishes are a mixture of Chinese, Indian and Malay styled curries, truly a reflection of our diverse cultural from different races.

Meat dishes are abundant, choose from star dishes such as Honey Chicken (Ayam Madu), Duck Curry (Kari Itik), Mutton Curry (Kari Kambing), Black Sauce Beef (Daging Masak Kicap) among others.

My Son's Plate
1 Meat + 2 Vegetables + 1 Egg + Sambal Ikan Bilis

The Fried Chicken was meaty and flavourful and my son enjoys this big portion of the breast meat that goes well with his 'nasi banjir' - his yellow rice was totally drenched in the mixture of all kinds of curries gravy available.

My Hubby's Plate
3 Meat + 1 Egg + 2 Vegetables

My hubby is a big eater especially when it comes to Nasi Kandar. He was tummy happy & thoroughly excited to try out as many dishes as possible. The 'Nasi Kandar' foodies ordered or loaded his big plate filled to the brim with fried chicken, ikan keli and curry fish tenggiri before topping it up with the omelette, curry potatoes, ladies fingers with some sambal belacan on the side!

My Healthy Plate
1 Meat + 3 Vegetables + 1 Ulam

If you are thinking that 'Nasi Kandar' is not a healthy dining option, let me show you how to have a nutritious, healthy and totally guilt-free eating with my choice of dishes I picked at Nasi Lemak Ong.

I took the Grilled Honey Chicken, some 'Ulam' of cucumber and poached ladies fingers together with 3 kinds of vegetable dishes such as ladies fingers, 'Kailan' and cucumber pineapple 'kerabu'. The sambal belacan was a good dipping sauce to eat with my white rice and ulam too.

Curry Fish Head

Apart from these selections, you can try out their Curry Fish Head that comes cooked in thick spicy curry minus the coconut milk served with long beans, tomatoes and ladies finger. Just perfect for sharing for 3 to 4 pax.

 The Black Roti

Healthy & Tasty Charcoal Roti Canai

If you have stomach for more, do try their one-of-its-kind roti canai - The Black Roti. The super black bread gets its colour from the healthy charcoal powder. It's definitely worth a try if you have not seen a black roti canai before.

Super crispy on the outside with a soft inside, it comes with three dipping curries and a sweet sambal on the side for dunking.
