POPULAR FOOD COURT Restarant Tai Chow Eatery At Bandar Bukit Puchong Selangor

Yummy Discovery At
Restoran Popular Food Court
One of my latest finds is an obscure corner coffee shop located in Bandar Bukit Puchong, Selangor called Restoran Popular Food Court. This place specialises in 'Tai Chow' or Stir Fry dishes, focuses on the typical Chinese order-to-cook food.

Actually, it started off as an invited food tasting to try out their new opening of their restaurant serving steamed fish head and Bak Kut Teh. But due to unforeseen circumstances, the owner have a new chef that revamped the whole menu offering more than just steamed fish head and Bak Kut Teh.

With a new chef on broad, now they proudly offer a wide selection of sumptuous pork, chicken, seafood, premium fish, egg and vegetable dishes cooked in several styles of cooking such as 'Baked in Claypot', stir fries, steaming, braised and much more to suit the locals tastes in Puchong.

My family and I are in for a treat that night when I drop by for a casual weekend dinner to check out the new-kid-from-the-block. The restaurant has ample parking space during the evening but it's slightly secluded from the main road.

Claypot Tilapia Fish
RM 34

Dinner begin with a steaming hot bowl of Claypot Talapia Fish. A tender white fleshed tilapia fish is well-prepared, cooked steamed in clay pot style. Unique and different from the many steamed fish dish I have tasted where the fish is steam cooked under hot boiling water.

Fresh & Fine Tasting Fish Dish

Chef Ussen, their new chef choose this method of cooking the fish as the steam-cooking seals in the rich taste of the fish. Choice of ingredients use is very complementary. Fresh garlic, ginger, chillies, scallions, shallots and deep-fried pork lard are part of the seasoning that goes into making the savoury and full of flavour gravy or sauce for the fish dish.

Everyone at the dinner table enjoys the sweet and fine tasting flesh of the tilapia fish together with the delicious simple sauce that goes wonderfully with warm white rice.

Sambal Petai Sotong
RM 12

Sambal Petai Sotong or Squid is another tasty offering. White squid is chosen as it brings out the flavour which is a heady mix of spiciness, aroma and the petai's natural pungency. Chef clever use of a fresh herb, basil is added in to enhance the taste and flavour besides the belacan and dried shrimp.

According to Chef Ussen, the spicy squid petai dish is cooked over high heat aka tai chow style without any water added at all. Hence, a little bit more of oil is used for the dish.

Hakka Fa Yuk
RM 13

Hakka-style Stir Fried Fa Yuk is an authentic Hakka dish with fine and thin strips of pork belly marinated before being stir-fry to perfection with black soy sauce and pork lard with sweet onions. It's for those craving for some crispy and part caramel pork with an intense flavour, which is rendered by thick soy sauce seasoning.

Claypot Kangkung
RM 9

Here's a beauty of greens - Kangkong or watercress is my all-time favourite vegetable dish to eat. Nutrient-packed leafy greens are best cooked with belacan or shrimp paste to bring out the taste. For this dish, Chef Ussen added some of his special ingredients such as deep fried salted fish and ham har cheong (Chinese fermented prawn paste) to the kang kong dish to elevates the flavour.

Cantonese Fried Noodles

Last but not least, we ordered a noodles dish at the very last minute just to check out the restaurant's noodles offering. The "Kong Foo Yin Yong" fares pretty good in my books. The gravy is smooth and not watery, good-to-the last spoon. What I like is that the chef is rather generous with the vegetable serving in the dish, cooked with pork and squid with the egg yolk added in last.

Apart from that, Chef uses the thicker type of mee hoon or rice vermicelli which has more texture and crunch especially after being deep fried. He added that he only prepare the kuey teow and mee hoon upon order to maintained its freshness.

Life Cafe Tea House @Taman Segar Cheras ~ Hearty Herbal Soups & Noodles Fare

The history of Life Cafe began with the opening of it's business operation way back in 1995 in Kuching. Since then, Life Cafe had expanded and gain much popularity for its unique variety of appetising Chinese and local cuisines. With 3 outlets in Kuching, Sarawak, one in Skudai, Johor and with the fifth in Taman Segar Cheras Kuala Lumpur.

Life Cafe @Taman Segar Cheras

Strategically located within the bustling suburb of Cheras in Taman Segar, and fast becoming a popular dining spots around the neighbourhood in this part of KL. This restaurant stands out with its rustic, wooden structure and a traditional Chinese-style rooftop. Life Cafe occupies two floors of a shop lot with spacious seating but parking can be terrible even on weekdays. I was told that many double parked and some just parked their cars at the nearby Leisure Mall to take a short stroll to this place.

Attractive Oriental Bamboo Door at the Entrance

Restaurant Signage artistically made from ropes

Lovely Collections of Chinese Teapot arrangements adorns the restaurant

The dining environment of Life Cafe's brought back nostalgia with rustic traditional style décors, hardwood furniture, bamboo fencing and even with the evergreen bamboo trees used for decorative purposes in a pleasant, cozy and laid back environment.

A medley of delicious dishes to choose, from made from freshly prepared with natural ingredients, spices and herbs. Select from choice of rice and noodles combos, soups, snacks and calming Chinese tea or juices to tempt your taste buds.

Flower Tea ~ RM 5.90
Ginseng Chrysanthemum Tea ~ RM 6.90

Selections of Ice Green Tea, Ice Black Tea, Juices and White Cloud

We start off our dinner with a round orders of the various ice green teas, ice black tea, juices and 'white cloud' beverages. One can be spoilt for choices when it comes to drinks or beverages at Life Cafe. They offers more than 50 choices for its patrons to choose from.

It actually take us a while to decide upon which drinks to choose and are quite lost looking at the extensive drinks menu.
Pots of Healthy Hearty Herbal Soups

Everyone knows that a warm and tasty soup will definitely put hearts at ease. Life Cafe provides a wide range of delicious, healthy and nourishing choices of eight different types of soups, including Ginseng Chicken Soup, Ten Treasure Chicken Herbal Soup, Chicken Soup with Lotus Roots, Stew Mutton with Yand & Medlar Herbs and Eight Treasure Home made Chicken Soup to name a few.

Slurp your way into delicious goodness with a whole lot of nourishment to fill your tummy and reminisce upon those delightful soul comforting soups that's prepared by your mom. Definitely a great starting point towards leading a healthier lifestyle.

Ginseng Chicken Soup ~ RM 9.50
Ten Treasure Chicken Herbal Soup ~ RM 12.50

A must-have are the 2 popular Chinese Herbal Soups consisting Ginseng Chicken Soup & Ten Treasure Chicken Herbal Soup. Served in a mini claypot, the soups are lusciously delicious and superbly rich in chicken flavours. Slow-simmered with combination of chinese herbs and spices, these soups does wonders to clear your stress and freshens up the mind with a dose of ginseng!

Stew Mutton with Yand & Medlar Herbs ~ RM 9.90
Eight Treasure Home Made Chicken Soup ~ RM 9.90

Traditional Chicken Soup with Lotus Roots ~ RM 9.50

Choices are plenty with a total of 8 choices ranging from various soups. Start your meal with a hearty soup and delight your palate on some delicious and tummy warming soup that's perfect for any time of the day.

Selections of Noodles, Vermicelli & Rice

At Life Cafe, diners can take their pick from the available dishes ranging from stew beef, curry chicken, chicken chop, pineapple chicken, fish fillet, lamb special spicy, curry lamb special among others to go with their speciality Life's Spicy Noodles, Dry Noodles, Shanghai Noodles, Ginger Noodles and even Xi-Chuan Noodles too.

If noodles is not your call, you can opt to have the Vermicelli instead with the same selections of spicy. dry, shanghai, ginger and Xi-Chuan flavours. Nevertheless, if you are a die-hard fan of rice (rice bucket fella) fret not, you can pick to have rice too with the dishes instead of the noodles or vermicelli.

My personal favourite for the night is the Classic Spicy Vermicelli (RM 7.90). The simple yet tasty vermicelli has a fragrant aroma of the fried shallots and scallion. It tastes so smooth and slurp-satisfying too. Another comfort food in my list!

Lamb Special, Pineapple Chicken & Curry Chicken

Home made Meat Rolls ~ RM7.50

My favourite snack is the traditional Home made Meat Rolls. They are flavoured minced chicken meat wrapped with bean curd and deep fried till perfection. Golden delightful crisp on the outside and meaty on the inside, these small bites are good for sharing. Tasted similar to Penang Lor Bak except it's made with chicken and not pork.

Life's Spicy Wonton ~ RM 8.90

Life's Steam Chicken Dumplings ~ RM 7.50
Life's Fried Chicken Dumplings ~ RM 7.50

Appetizers like fried or steam dumplings, spring onions egg pancake, traditional tea egg, crispy fried wontons are also available from their menu. These small bites are all good for sharing and goes well for someone wanting a light meal instead.
Butter Toast ~ RM 3

In addition, the Butter Toast is a crowd-pleaser. Everyone just simply love it. A strong buttery of sweet and savoury, the special thick toast really taste good on first bite. Even better if having this to go with black coffee.

Black Sesame Toast ~ RM 3.90

Simply a Must-Order at Life Cafe, this toast comes served with thick savoury black sesame paste spread on the inch thick crispy toasted bread. Not too sweet with smoky flavour of the healthy roasted black sesame.

Peanut Cookies ~ RM 3.90

Lastly out of curiosity sake, we order some peanut cookies from the 'home made dessert' section of the menu. It's not bad but nothing to shout about too. I have eaten better ones than these during the Chinese New Year festive celebration. Well, you can try if you like but if your bench mark it against the soft with melt-in-the-mouth type then you will be deeply disappointed.

My foodie friends and I (on the left) always ready with a smile for the camera while waiting for our food and drinks to arrive.

Life Cafe will be unforgettable if you pick the right dishes on the menu (preferably the soups and noodles) to suit your palate. Price pretty decent, won't burn a hole in your pocket. As for me, I would probably come back for the Herbal Soups as they are real value for money and the Classic Spicy Vermicelli ... my new comfort food!

Seow Man Hot Soups ~ A Claypot of Goodness @ Semenyih Kajang

One of my latest finds is an obscure little restaurant called Seow Man Hot Soups located in Semenyih, Kajang. My hubby and I happens to chance upon this eating place when we were on our annual Cheng Meng festival trip to the nearby Nirvana Memorial Park to pay homage to our ancestors.

Upon entering we knew that something good and delicious coming our way just by observing the amount of customers waiting patiently to be served that afternoon. It was packed to the brim during lunch hour. Parking space are aplenty. Customers usually finds parking right infront of the restaurant which is facing an empty lot.

We were also informed by the owner that they will soon be relocated to nearby new shoplot at the address stated above in a week or two. Thanks goodness, we got 'mouth-luck' as we managed to check out this place before they gone missing the next time. I enjoyed eating the food so much that I promised the lady boss I shall blog about this and help to promote her food plus the relocation of her new shop.

Incidentally, there is a 'Copy-Cat' Hot Soups restaurant just right next door, trying to replicate the restaurant maybe to confuse patrons, so do not get mistaken and ate at the wrong shop. Hahaha ...

Here is the food list, a short 20 items menu to choose from bestsellers Seow Man Hot Soups dishes to go with your rice. Sometimes, I prefer a short list as we can focus on ordering the best of the bests, signature dishes and not going through a trial & error trying to find out which is the tastier one in a restaurant.

For drinks, there are a good list of perfect thirst-quencher of healthy juices such as Passion Fruit Juice, Honey Lemon Lime, Chlorophyll to herbal drinks such as the Special Ice Jelly Bee, Ginseng Chrysanthenum tea,  Sugarcane with Water Chestnut, Longan with Lou Han Guo and Winter Melon Drink too. Prices are reasonable as they ranged from RM 2.50 to RM 3.00.

Crunchy Starter: Foo Chuk Pork Rolls

Foo Chuk Pork Rolls
My first dish which was a hot favourite on every diners' table. This must-have Foo Chuk Pork Rolls does makes a very good appetizer before the main meal. Juicy minced meat with chopped carrot and chestnut makes a good filling for the foo chuk roll.

It was full of flavour and seeing that the cook was an old-timer, he did not stinge on the main ingredients. You can taste the flavoursome meaty portion with a very crispy foochok wrap on the outside. So good, you gotta eat this on its own without the dipping chillie sauce.

Seriously Hot Pepper Soup
For the main dish, of course we have the famous dish they are popular for - Hot Pepper Soup. They served a variety of hot pepper soups ranging from pork belly, innards to pork stomach and even chicken too. Since I'm not a fan of pork innards, we opted for a mixed version with some chicken for me and the kids, together with some pork stomach to satisfy my hubby's craving.

Served in their signature claypot, this fragrant and herb-laden hot soup comes with lots of chinese celery (kang choy in Chinese or daun sup in Malay). A fragrant herb usually added to many types of broth like the sup kambing or sup ayam, perhaps bring out the flavour in it. The soup had a strong and distinct peppery taste, not too spicy, just what a pepper soup should taste like.

I also wished to highlight that the chicken used here were of the better grade, kampung chicken grade where the meat is tender and chewy. So the end result is of course, a tasty tummy-warming soup to soothe your soul!

Mouth-watering: Hot Pepper Pork Belly
Next up was an excellent Pork Belly cooked dry-styled called the "Fah Chiew Fah Yok", translated to Hot Pepper Pork Belly. The savoury dark, caramelised black sauce comes from the light soya sauce, oyster sauce, dark soya sauce, sugar and Shaoxing wine.

Actually I'm not a fan of pork belly for its fat layer, but for this case I gave it a miss. The stir-fried pork belly with chillies padi and dry chillies, drenched in the black sauce were soft and tender, bursting with delicious savoury and hot spicy flavours. And it went so well with hot steaming white rice.

My young son was basically scrapping the bottom of the claypot for more of the tasty black sauce to go with his rice. Well in the end, I gave in and let him pour his rice in to the claypot instead for him to enjoy his hearty meal!

A Close Shot of  Porki-li-cious Pork Belly coated in the savoury sauce

Packs a Fire Punch of Chillies

My perfect choice of drink that day was this very special Ice Jelly Bee. A concoction of lime juice with honey mixed with soft, slippery jelly, this is a light and refreshing drink that brought relief to me from the heat of the sun especially after visiting the humid memorial park.

Our total bill came to RM 41.90 only, with food, rice and drinks included for 4 pax. Real value for money and it can't get any better than this for the good standard of food served here.

Overall, Seow Man Hot Soups is a great place to eat, good food with reasonable pricing for all their dishes. Besides that, you can be rest assured that each dish is cooked to perfection, credited to the years of experience that lies with the reputation of this old restaurant.
