Hi Everyone! Latest cheap hawker food updates from Auntie Lilly again. Having just celebrated the brand New Lunar New Year Of the Fire Rooster, what we all fear most is the increase in food prices after every Chinese New Year celebration. In fact, one of my favourite pork chop noodles stalls increased their price from RM 6.50 to RM 7 this morning when I dropped by to take away/tapau for my son's lunch.

Delicious Hong Kong Treats @ The Roast House in Kuchai Entrepreneurs Park by FollowMeToEatLa

The restaurant offers rice plus noodles @ affordable prices with a smattering of Hong Kong and local dishes. It's a cozy restaurant where food is mouthwatering in taste and the atmosphere friendly and casual.

Daily freshly roasted meats, including delicious looking roast duck, roast pork, barbecued pork and roast chicken by their very own In-house Chef with more 10 years of culinary experience.

Barbecue Pork Rice
RM 9

In-house specialty is Barbecue Pork Rice or "Ngam Yin Siew Wan Rice" which derived from Stephen Chow’s classic comedy film, The God of Cookery. Since then, this BBQ Pork Rice become a synonym in Hong Kong due to the popularity of the film!

Appetising bowl of BBQ pork rice

I simply loved this rice dish. One can actually salivate or drools over just by looking at this appetising bowl of BBQ pork served with sunny side up egg accompanied with some boiled siew pak choy. Chef's choice of using the pork belly for this dish was excellent.

That was a melt-in-the-mouth experience as I slowly savours each piece of the BBQ meat. Moist & aromatic flavour oozing in my mouth, wonderful combination texture of a nice layer of meat with a nice layer of fat, it's roasted close to perfection. Can't believe this as I'm never a fan of 'fatty cha siew' but honestly, this is some of the best-cooked BBQ meat I‘ve ever had.

RM 9

BBQ Pork with Noodles is of course a very special dish worth mentioning for it is very pleasing to the palate. The BBQ pork with tender and juicy interior that was oozing with flavour. The accompanying sauce is sweet and tasty, bringing out the best in the wantan noodles too. It was suffice to say that bowls are licked clean that night.

Note the generous serving of the BBQ Pork, thickly sliced mouthwatering BBQ belly pork served with dry version of the wantan noodles.

The ingredient like the Special Wantan Noodles used in this dish is imported to preserve the authenticity of taste according to the owner, Mr. Weng Kham himself. I especially enjoy the wantan noodles that is springy, crunchy & extremely fine, very different from the usual local ones we used to eat at the shops. Because of this, it gets a thumbs up from me. Maybe the next time I come by this place, I'll not hesitate to order a 'ma-meen' or double servings of this awesome noodles again.

Well, here's two thumbs up too for Mr.Weng Kham himself, looking smart & trendy in OpenRicers' Brand new Apron] for his passion in eating & serving the juicy, tender & full of flavour roast meat to his patrons.

RM 7

Well sometimes looks can be quite deceiving in some instant as in this particular noodles dish. From the appearance, the serving of the minced pork was extremely generous & looks delightfully savoury.

The noodles were just right to my liking as any hakka noodles should be. Light & springy cooked till ala-dante just like the pasta does. But, I'm sorry to say that the chef might have gone overboard with the seasoning as it's quite salty. Apart from that, except for the extreme saltiness, I find the noodles quite palatable.

This was one of the dishes which I can finish due to too much soya or seasoning added.

If you have always encounter indecisiveness when it comes to food, then worry no more! You may savour your meal from The Roast House Value Set Lunch from 12pm to 3pm. Pick your main course from 5 delicious choices such as Barbecue Pork “Ngam Yin Siew Wan” Rice, Barbecue Pork with Noodles, Traditional Hakka Noodles, Ipoh Chicken Hor Fun, Shrimp Wantan Hor Fun and many more. Also, enjoy a bowl of soup of the day and watermelon for extra fulfilment in your tummy!

After the food galore, quench your thirst with either a glass of barley, herbal tea or lemon grass . The value for money Set Lunch ranges from RM 9.90 to RM11.90 which is really a well-balanced & complete meal, definitely would not burn a hole in your pocket. Thus, it gives you the nice comfy feeling after dining there.

The Soup of the Day I have for that day is the Lotus Root with Arrowroot Soup or in Cantonese 'Lean Ngau Fun Kot' soup. It's highly nutritious, known to dispel heat and toxics, strengthen body and also increase appetite. I have to give my two thumbs up for this soup as it's tasty, hearty and flavourful.

Note the chunky piece of lean meat, lotus, arrowroots, nuts & dates as essential ingredients to making an authentic soup. I couldn’t resist from ordering a second & third serving as it's very tasty and addictive, too! The owner, Mr.Weng Kham confirms that a different soup is boil & served every day with unlimited serving ...

RM 8

The Roast House's Ipoh Hor Fun wasn't up to the mark according to my standards although it's served with lots of fresh shrimps, chicken slices, and spring onions. The 2 most important criteria to meet in making a good hor fun is the soup base & the type of noodles used. Firstly, the soup lacks in the prawn & chicken taste resulting it to become quite tasteless.

On top of that, the noodles should be especially smooth, fine and slippery hor fun, but they may have use another type of kuey teow commonly used for soup or fried version (char kway teow) that is broader, thicker and not as smooth as the original hor fun.

Note the unusually thick and broad looking kuey teow in this bowl of soup.

Last but not least, if you're not choosy or 'cerewet' foodie like me (I always have a benchmark of all the food in my list) ... feel free to give this humble noodles a try!

Taiwanese Noodles & Rice Fare @ Lai Lai Casual Dining - Off Jln Kuchai Lama by FollowMeToEatla

Fragrant Stewed Beef Noodle - Tai Tao Steamboat in Kepong Klang Valley
   Fragrant Stewed Beef Noodle

Beef noodle soup is a Chinese and Taiwanese noodle soup made of stewed or red braised beef, beef broth, vegetables and Chinese noodles. In Taiwan, it is considered a national dish and the city of Taipei holds an annual Beef Noodle Festival, where chefs and restaurants compete to for the "best beef noodle" title in Taiwan.

Specializing in Taiwanese delicacies, Lai Lai Casual Dining serves this famous beef noodles which is originated from Sheraton Hotel, Taipei. In Singapore, they have quite a number of outlets that have been operating for the past ten years serving authentic Taiwanese cuisine.

I was totally overwhelmed with the fragrant and aromatic beefy broth upon entering the restaurant. The aroma itself was just mouth-watering. This is the absolute proof of delicious and authentic food in the making! For a foodie like me, good food ought to smell good even before we savour it, right?

The soup was savory and tasty, well infused with the flavour of beef, and I absolutely love the taste of the springy noodles. The dark beef broth is strong in herbs and spices, very flavourful and somewhat spicy with its pepperish undertones. The secret of a good stewed beef noodle is the broth, with the excellent chunks of tender braised beef. Springy egg noodles are served piping hot topped with chopped spring onions with a good combination of siew pak choy.

Comfortable and cosy, the ambience in Lai Lai is just nice for family dining and busy office workers looking for a nice decent meal. This corner lot eatery is quite spacious with plenty of indoor and outdoor seatings available, so seating should not be a problem.

The word 'Lai Lai' is a Mandarin phrase loosely translated to mean "come on in” which is obviously a perfect name for this eatery but believe me, I think it is truly the aroma of the beefy broth that is really attracting hungry customers to come on in!

Crunchy Starter: Pepper Salt Chicken - Tai Tao Steamboat in Kepong Klang Valley
   Crunchy Starter: Pepper Salt Chicken

One of Lai Lai's more popular side dishes was the Pepper Salt Chicken. This crunchy snack is basically small pieces of fried chicken thigh marinated with five-spice powder, cooking wine, soy, sugar among others and served with fried basil leaves. If you’ve been to Taipei and its many colorful night markets, you can’t miss salt and pepper chicken.

As a fan of Taiwanese fried hawker fare, I've sampled many salt & pepper chicken at different Taiwanese joints including the Shihlin Taiwan Street Snacks ® in KL and the XXL Crispy Chicken in Taipei's night market itself.

Well, what do I think of this Lai Lai's version of Salt and Pepper Chicken?

I found it pretty tasty in its own right. It was bursting with flavour and crisp. I especially love the fried Thai basil leaves that accompanied these crunchy morsels. The essence of salt and pepper chicken lies in the generous use of five-spice powder. Just right, not too salty or with an overwhelming taste of the spice powder. The chicken thigh was well marinated, tasted tender and juicy as it was very well fried ie crispy on the outside yet juicy on the inside. Best served hot. Price per serving is RM 7.80. These crunchy, appetising bites are always so addicting and I couldn’t stop eating them ! Yummy !

Nourishing Herbal Dang Gui Duck Soup
 RM 14

I always have a great interest or liking to any food or dishes that is particularly good and healthy for the body. I was certainly very pleased to be giving an opportunity to try this nourishing Dang Gui Duck Soup.

Angelica sinensis or commonly known as dang gui is hailed as the Supreme Woman's herb. Lai Lai's duck soup was certainly atummy-warming soup with lots of health benefits. The medicinal properties really give this dish a healthy edge. In my opinion, duck was used instead of the usual pork bones because it makes the soup sweeter and thus, more tasty.

The duck meat was tender and soft as it have been boiled or rather simmered for several hours with various nutritious ingredients, thus giving it a bittersweet aroma. It was served in claypot to retain its warmness. I would recommend this comforting herbal soup especially to the ladies or anyone who is feeling under the weather, needing some extra boost of energy !

** Simple & Good Braised Pork Rice ** - Tai Tao Steamboat in Kepong Klang Valley
** Simple & Good Braised Pork Rice **

My favourite of the night without a doubt was this really humble rice dish with pork, nuts and stewed eggs. It arrived covered in braised pork drenched in gravy, with a portion of stewed egg & braised nuts on the side, as well as a heaping of finely-chopped fresh celery leaves and some preserved mustard. Mix them all up, and the result was an amazing dish of sweet, savoury, warm and cold flavours and elements that work surprisingly well together. I really enjoyed the overall taste of this comforting dish. Delicious is the only word to describe it...

Simple and good, the pork loin pieces were soft and tender, drenched in the special sauce, bursting with delicious savoury, hitting the right spots. It’s really amazing how a simple dish like this can satisfy even the most pickiest eaters. Suffice to say that bowls were licked clean that night and I wished I had a bigger stomach for more rice as it was insanely good! A 'Must Try' dish for any rice lovers! Real value for money as it costs only RM 8.80 per serving.
