The latest craze in town as everyone was talking about 'Nasi Lemak Pondan' - Nasi Lemak operator, Jojie Kamaruddin a transgender, who was inspired by her mother, who has been selling nasi lemak for more than 30 years, decided to open the nasi lemak stall with a catchy name 'Nasi Lemak Pondan'! 😍😍😍

Bet you have heard of Nasi Lemak Anak Dara, then there's the Nasi Lemak Bujang. Now, it's the latest craze of Nasi Lemak Pondan that hit Malaysia's roadside culinary landscape. The word 'Pondan' is a general Malay term for transvestite, describing male to female transgender individuals.

Jojie Kamaruddin says that her stall may be less a week old, but it has caught up national attention with her catchy name and a much-loved Malaysian favourite dish. Though there may be some haters giving her some backlash when images of her stall went viral, it did not deter her.

"I named my stall Nasi Lemak Dodi, people will still shout 'Pondan'. Whatever name I use, be it Sally or Milah, people will still call it Pondan. I might as well just use that as my stall name,” she said. 

Currently, Jojie's  packet of simple nasi lemak biasa with eggs, anchovies and cucumber is sold for RM1.80. Her nasi lemak is delicious with a variety of dishes such as curry chicken, chicken rendang, stingray sambal, squid sambal, ayam masak merah, sambal paru or fried chicken to choose from. The price goes up to RM 4.80 with either one of the extra toppings of lauk / dishes.

Jojie and her fifteen siblings were brought up and supported by her beloved mother's nasi lemak business as her dad seek early retirement due to illness. Although she is a wedding planner and fashion designer by profession, Jojie decided to open up the nasi lemak stall with the help from her siblings to earn extra income due to the current economic situation.

Business has been pretty good for her so far as they sold 10kg of rice by 3pm although they planned to open from 10am to 6 pm. Jojie said her nasi lemak business - made an instant hit due to social media - was bringing her more than RM2,000 daily.

Transgender nasi lemak seller Jojie Kamaruddin said "Therefore I would like to gift 100 packets every Friday to mosques around Kuala Lumpur. My siblings will be in charge of transporting them,"

Counting her blessings and celebrating her successful business venture, she hands out 100 packets of her tasty nasi lemak to the neighbourhood mosque-goers every Friday. She plans to continue doing so comes every Friday to the local mosque.

I have great respect her courage and wishing all the best to Jojie Kamaruddin & her 'Nasi Lemak Pondan' business. Doesn't matter whether is Nasi Lemak ~ 'Anak Dara', 'Bujang' or 'Pondan', but what important is that it's halal, tasty and value-for-money decent food that all Malaysian enjoy eating! πŸ‘πŸ‘πŸ‘

  1. Hopefully there'll be more good stories like this about transgenders. This should be a start of cultivating acceptance in our society. Too much hatred at the moment
