ATS Curry House - Eating Under A Tree @PJ Section 22

My search for good and cheap Indian food has brought me to this secluded place in Petaling Jaya called ATS Curry House. This place was recommended to me by a fellow foodie member from 'Best Indian Restaurants in Malaysia' Facebook Group I joined recently. He has been a regular customer eating there for the past 6 years now.

My latest finds is an obscure road side stall located in Taman Aman, Section 22, Petaling Jaya. This place specialise in serving typical Indian curry rice for lunch. I was told that this stall have been in business for over 30 years.

My young foodie son has been craving for some nice Indian rice ever since I boycotted eating at Sri Paandi for some other reasons which I do not wish to indulge now. So here I am with 2 very hungry kids and hubby too on toll ready to check out this place for some real nice food.

It was quite easy to find the makan place as it was located on the road adjacent to some old shophouses. Parking space is aplenty, you can park your car along the road right next to the stall or opposite the shophouses.

And to the uninitiated, the stall is usually packed to the brim during lunch hour, so be ready to queue as it can get really long at times. I was told that many office workers, factories workers, even policemen and all sort of working class people would frequent this place for a nice and reasonable priced decent lunch.

I met this nice and friend Indian chap manning the serving counter. He was ever ready to sport a smile for my camera that day.

They served meat choices of fried chicken, fried fish, mutton curry and ayam masak merah. They also have fried or boiled eggs to go with the rice too. All rice are served together with vege of the day and topped with choice of fish or chicken curry.

I was drooling over the big pieces of the freshly fried chicken, so delicious looking and can't wait to taste it with my curry rice with lots of gravy to bathe in. I loved my nasi banjir style too besides the roti canai banjir.

We have a choice of fried egg or boiled egg to go with our Indian rice in this serving. Boiled eggs are my favourite; great to eat together with curry gravy, but was worried it might be too filling for me this time. So I opted for some fried egg instead. My pinggan of nasi was practically spilling all over as I got greedy and ask for nasi tambah (addition toppings of rice).

Alright, getting down to the gist of things, I found the fried chicken really juicy and crispy, fried to prefection, not dry. But one complaint from me was that it wasn't that flavourful, it was like they didn't marinate it long enough for the meat to soak up the seasoning. I have eaten better tasting Indian-style deep fried chicken, so this wasn't up to mark.

Anyhow, I have to say that the compensating factor was the chicken pieces were quite large and very meaty too. Generous portion of 1/4 chicken to go with my rice of curry gravy.

The rice was also soft, vegetable of the day was beans sprout cooked with tumeric and there was a 'secret weapon' that went well with it: the chicken curry and fish curry gravies.

Thumbs up for the chicken gravy, it was positively thick and flavourful, with just enough spiciness to go with the steamed rice. I even went back to top-up some of the savoury and delicious gravy. I guess it did satisfy my deepest cravings for the ultimate curry gravy.

I'm definitely coming back again and have it with my roti canai or on the healthier side, I just might pick to eat thosai with the yummy curry chicken gravy.

Next, was this mutton curry my hubby choose to eat with his rice instead of the fried chicken. I'm not a fan of mutton and have never develop a liking for this since young.

My mutton loving daughter and hubby gives their thumbs up too for this mutton curry. Plentiful portions, bursting with flavours of the  aromatic spices; delightful treat to the taste buds. Must have been cooked on slow fire for a long period so the mutton was soft and tender, the meat practically fall off the bone.

Spicy Delights: Generous serving with chicken or mutton with sides of vegetable and fried egg.
My total bill comes to RM 32 for 2 plates of  fried chicken set, 2 plates of mutton curry set, 1 glass of teh ais with 2 glasses of H2O. There was no extra charge for rice too.

Overall, ATS Curry House is a good place for some decent Indian curry rice. Prices is also very reasonable, guaranteed not to burn a hole in your pocket. And of course, the + point if you enjoy eating under a tree... while savouring some easy, delicious, comfort food that have maintained its quality and standard through the 30 odd years.

  5. I went back to check this curry house again recently last week & they maintained their prices & quality of food. The mutton curry & chicken curry gravy were just as tasty & awesome as before. Price was same with RM 8.50 for mutton & RM 6.50 for fried chicken. My cravings satisfied !
