Every now and then, it’s great to go completely off the radar and step away from my usual Chinese food hunt. Recently, I decided to explore some budget-friendly Malay cuisine—specifically looking for a Malay-style Tai Chow restaurant.

My search led me to a lively residential pocket in Taman Medan, Petaling Jaya, where the streets are lined with roadside eateries. We ultimately settled at Restoran Selera Golok to see what they had to offer.

Looking through the menu, we opted for their signature Set Siakap 40. Priced at just RM 40, this economy set is designed for two diners to share. It comes bundled with a Siakap fish, a mixed Tomyam soup, a kailan vegetable dish, telur dadar, and two plates of white rice.

Here is my honest breakdown of the meal!

The Highlights: Generous Fish & Stellar Tomyam
Right off the bat, I was highly impressed by the size of the Siakap Fish. For an RM40 combo meal, the portion size of the fish dish was incredibly generous and well worth the value.

Tomyam Sup Campur (Mixed Tomyam Soup)

However, the absolute star of the night was the Tomyam Sup Campur (Mixed Tomyam Soup). It was beautifully packed with flavor, carrying just the right balance of punch and spice. It easily became the highlight of the entire dinner. Oi… Sedap giler!

Stir-Fry Kailan

The Sides: Telur Dadar & Kailan
To complement the mains, the set includes a classic Telur Dadar. While it’s probably not the healthiest option to indulge in a deep-fried egg, it was undeniably pretty good and nicely prepared.

Stir-Fry Kailan

The only real letdown of the set was the Stir-Fry Kailan. Unfortunately, the kitchen was a bit too heavy-handed with the seasoning, leaving the vegetable dish far too salty for my taste.

Because the restaurant is located in a dense residential area, parking directly in front of the shop is extremely limited. I highly recommend parking your car safely along the main road and taking a short, easy walk into the restaurant instead.
