Izakaya (Japanese Watering Hole) and yakitori (grilled skewered food) are comforting terms for the Japanese. At the end of the day - no matter how long it has been - these delights can work their magic to help exhausted salarymen de-stress and refuel.

One good place to check out is the newly opened 1-month-old gastropub called  Butaya Izakaya 豚家居酒屋, located at Sri Hartamas, Kuala Lumpur. Opened in June last month, Butaya Izakaya focuses on Japanese Yakitori, complete with a wide variety of Japanese cuisines such as sashimi, Age (deep fried), Don (rice dishes), Ramen/Soba noodles, Tempura and side dishes.

Ensconced in Sri Hartamas - one of Kuala Lumpur's all-embracing food hubs for Japanese and Korean food - the restaurant's fancy old school Japanese Izakaya posters plastered on the walls of the interior will catch your attention as you enter.

The bar's floor and walls are entirely made of wood and are covered in ads and posters. The atmosphere is unique and you can feel yourself sliding into a real authentic Izakaya watering hole.

The Long Kitchen Spans The Length Of The Restaurant

It's definitely refreshing and a pleasant surprise to find a smaller set-up, such as  Butaya Izakaya 豚家居酒屋 and the plus point is that they make their offerings more affordable and acceptable in order to reach out to more customers. 

Started my dining session sampling their appetisers before moving on to their top favourite among diners - Yakitori, Sashimi, Karaage, Gyoza, Ramen and even an egg pizza!

There are 30 types of Yakitori (skewers) to choose from, among them pig's internal organ such as Heart, Tongue, Kidney, Liver, apart from the usual Belly, Loin and Shoulder that is seldom prepared in the yakitori way, delicate items such as Asparagus Roll, Leek Roll and Shitake as well as interesting ones such as Chicken Heart, Tail, Skin, Gizzard and Liver, including healthy fish options of Salmon, Saba, Unagi, Hamachi and Shishamo to pick from.

Butaya Izakaya got us covered with their simply delicious and really good value-for-money Teriyaki Pork Ribs. We had a pork-tastic feast savouring the flavourful and juicy ribs down-to-bones that night. Just remember to try them - highly recommended dish to order when dining here!

This is something I have not tried before -  Luncheon Meat Egg Pizza, that's definitely not in a Japanese restaurant. Love the sinful and flavourful luncheon meat cooked with soft and fluffy omelette style. Topped with chopped scallions, dried bonito flakes, seaweed and a drizzling of mayo to enhance the flavour.

Another rice dish to try is their Teriyaki Pork Don RM 24 -  it's a hearty and comforting meal bound to satisfy your heart and soul. The pork belly was well-marinated with savoury Teriyaki sauce, loved the charred bits of the equal lean and fat meat within.
