Bet you have heard of Nasi Lemak Anak Dara, then there's the Nasi Lemak Bujang. Now, it's the latest craze of Nasi Lemak Pondan that hit Malaysia's roadside culinary landscape. The word 'Pondan' is a general Malay term for transvestite, describing male to female transgender individuals.

Jojie Kamaruddin says that her stall may be less a week old, but it has caught up national attention with her catchy name and a much-loved Malaysian favourite dish. Though there may be some haters giving her some backlash when images of her stall went viral, it did not deter her.

"I named my stall Nasi Lemak Dodi, people will still shout 'Pondan'. Whatever name I use, be it Sally or Milah, people will still call it Pondan. I might as well just use that as my stall name,” she said.

Currently, Jojie's simple nasi lemak biasa is sold for RM1.80 per packet. Her nasi lemak is delicious with a variety of dishes such as squid sambal, ayam masak merah, sambal paru or fried chicken to choose apart from the standard nasi lemak biasa of coconut rice with sides of boiled egg, anchovies, cucumber and spicy sambal sauce. The price goes up to RM 4.80 with either one of the extra toppings of lauk / dishes.

Jojie and her fifteen siblings were brought up and supported by her beloved mother's nasi lemak business as her dad seek early retirement due to illness. Although she is a wedding planner and fashion designer by profession, Jojie decided to open up the nasi lemak stall with the help from her siblings to earn extra income due to the current economic situation.

Business has been pretty good for her so far as they sold 10kg of rice by 3pm although they planned to open from 10am to 6 pm. Counting her blessings, she donated a hundred packets of her tasty nasi lemak to the neighbourhood mosque which her family used to frequent. She plans to continue doing so comes every Friday to the local mosque.

I have great respect her courage and wishing all the best to Jojie Kamaruddin & her 'Nasi Lemak Pondan' business. Doesn't matter whether is Nasi Lemak ~ 'Anak Dara', 'Bujang' or 'Pondan', but what important is that it's halal, tasty and value-for-money decent food that all Malaysian enjoy eating! πŸ‘πŸ‘πŸ‘

Thank you The Star for your positivity!

  1. Hopefully there'll be more good stories like this about transgenders. This should be a start of cultivating acceptance in our society. Too much hatred at the moment
