In creating an auspicious feast for family and friends to usher in luck, prosperity and joy, Shanghai has specially created three set menus. Starting from MYR 238 nett per person, these menus are perfect for large gatherings and reunions. Some of the tantalising dishes offered are Double-boiled superior fish maw soup with fermented black garlic, Pan-fried cod with a touch of Brandy, Sautéed freshwater shrimps with roasted sesame paste, Pan-fried glutinous rice cakes with sesame seeds and more.
For the main course, we started off with an individual bowl of Double-boiled Superior Fish Maw soup with fermented Black Garlic, Black Chicken. and Cordyceps flowers.
Double-boiled Superior Fish Maw Soup With Fermented Black Garlic, Black Chicken & Cordyceps Flowers
This is a very unique and nutritious broth, using 3 main ingredients of Fermented Black Garlic, Black Chicken and Cordyceps Flowers for their special health benefits. In fact not my first time tasting a dish cooked with Black Garlic, and many chefs are using it like crazy introducing and incorporating it into their Chinese New Year dishes this year. We have famous Chef Justin Hor from Noble House serving it in his special dish, the Pan Fried Lamb Cubes With Black Garlic Sauce on Hobba Leaf as part of the CNY specialities dishes to try.

Check Out The Fish Maw, Cordyceps & Black Garlic In The Broth
I was particularly intrigued with the use of Fermented Black Garlic in the broth. Known for its many potential health benefits, the black garlic gives a sweet, earthy and tantalizing taste to the broth. The warm broth had a smooth and pleasant umami taste.
Pan Fried Cod with A Touch Of Brandy
The Cod Fish was particularly memorable as the fish was very fresh, and the sweet flesh was simply perfect with the accompanied of the shredded ginger.
Shanghainese Seafood Noodles With Black Truffles
First time tasting some noodles in the Chinese New Year menu, I find the handmade Shanghainese Seafood noodles dish a refreshing break from the norm. The more popular rice dishes such as steamed glutinous rice with cured waxed meat or fried rice with yam and waxed meat, just to name a few are some of the dishes served for the festive menu.
A good alternative as it was flavourful with plump prawns, fish fillet, mushroom and a dollop of aromatic black truffle. The luxurious black truffle did wonders to a simple noodles dish bringing out a rich, indescribable, nutty, sweet and aromatic flavour to it. Well done, Chef Wong! 😍😍😍
Xiao Long Bao (小笼包)
Steamed Shanghainese Meat Dumpling
No meal is complete when dining at Shanghai without a taste of Chef Wong's famed one and only Steamed Shanghainese Meat Dumpling or Xiao Long Bao (小笼包). Chef shares that it is a must have when dining at Shanghai and all his diners loves it. Needless to say, I was pretty impressed with the little dainty Xiao Long Bao upon the first bite.
It was perfectly handmade with translucent skin and thin enough to hold the minced meat and delicious hot broth encased in the delicate dumpling. Wish I have more as one is seriously never enough to satisfy my cravings. Must come again one day to taste more! 😋😋😋
Pan-fried Glutinous Rice Cake with Sesame Seeds
No Chinese New Year gathering is complete without a taste of the sticky nian gao, (glutinous rice cake), and the sticky desserts at Shanghai are reinvented as the Pan-fried Glutinous Rice Cake with Sesame Seeds. Coated in sesame seeds and pan-fried into a thin slice, the nian gao turns into a very soft and chewy with just the right amount of resistance, truly a gooey delicious dessert.
Chilled Cream of Sago with Seasonal Mango & Pomelo
To end the meal on a sweet note, the Chilled Cream of Sago with Seasonal Mango & Pomelo, a rich and sweet creamy dessert captured the essence of the Lunar New Year.
Available on the Chef’s Specialities a la carte menu are unique and delectable creations to be savoured - Braised wild Mediterranean red prawn with brown sauce, Braised abalone with superior fish maw, dried scallop and mushroom in casserole, Deep-fried bean curd skin stuffed with French goose liver and truffle paste, Braised sea cucumber with Spanish pork and sea moss and more.
The Chinese New Year set menus and la carte offerings are available through February 11, 2017.
