A must try - Delicious Carrot Walnut cake - Celicakes in Sri Hartamas Klang Valley
A must try - Delicious Carrot Walnut cake

I was introduced to Celicakes when I chance upon an offer from Groupon, a discount site to buy their 2kg cakes at 45% off. I was immediately mesmerised by the lovely and pretty pictures of gourmet cakes. As I'm not a cake and pastry person ... the cheesy, creamy chocolatey cakes doesn't melt me, I decided to order the healthy, full of fibre 'Carrot Walnut Cake' instead. To my delight, the cake was seriously good to its last bite. This cake was covered with rich creamy cheese that has lemonish flavour, filled with ever healthy carrot, raisin, apricot, melon seeds and crunchy walnut too. Loved the tangy lemon-flavoured cream cheese. It was light, not heavy as some cakes that sometimes leaves you with a bloated feelings after the 1st piece.

Nut lovers will surely rejoice at this carrot walnut concoctions covered with generous cream cheese. Available for 1 kg @ 70.00, 2 kg @Rm 100.00.

Celicakes also doesn't compromise on quality. They ensure the taste, texture and freshness of their products and only use the best quality ingredients. Rest assured, Celicakes breads and pastries are not kept for more than 24 hours, so you know that you have the best of best with Celicakes!

Delightful Egg Tart @Tong Kee at Sri Petaling by FollowMeToEatLa

DELIGHTFUL EGG TARTS
ONLY AT TONG KEE
RM 1.50 Per Piece

Tong Kee Confectionery brings back lots of sweet memories of my childhood. I start tasting my first bite of Tong Kee egg tart since young way back in the 1970's. Eating them often reminds me of the time when my parents would buy and serve it for our breakfast and tea break for decades of years. Although the business has been started for so many years, their quality is consistently good.

Walking into any of Tong Kee outlets, we will be greeted by a comforting aroma of fresh egg tarts and bread. Their egg custard is very soft, creamy, juicy and the outer layer is very velvety which is fluffy and crunchy. You will experience the melt-in-the-mouth sensation upon the first bite into the pastry, with its buttery and crispier texture. To satisfy your sudden craving for egg tarts, Tong Kee would be the obvious choice as it serves one of the best egg tarts in town.

Hakka Style Yong Tau Foo ~ Wai Kee Restaurant in 4 1/2 miles Old Klang Road by FollowMeToEatLa

Wai Kee Restaurant is a typical, no frill coffee shop lot Chinese restaurant located at the main road of Jalan Kelang Lama or better known as Old Klang Road. Specialised in a variety of typically homemade dishes like the steamed minced pork with salted fish, braised pork belly with yam, curry fish head, signature homemade taufoo and not forgetting everyone's favourite the yong tau foo.

Great stuff @RM 1.50 per piece - Wai Kei Restaurant in Seputeh Klang Valley
Great stuff @RM 1.50 per piece

What I like about the Wai Kee's yong tau foo is that the serving is extra large. Real value for money. The rectangle shape tau foo is stuffed with fish paste and cooked in bean paste for added flavour. Pure Hakka-style, made just like how my mum would do it. And it goes well with the hot steaming white rice, especially with the bean paste (meen shee) sauce. Healthy and truly nutritious ... I enjoy eating this stuffed tau foo all the time.

Brinjal have always been one of my health food. The nutritious eggplant or brinjal just as other colourful veggies, has a host of health benefits. Known for its amazing health benefits, it helps keeping diabetes in control, good for the heart and brain, anti bacterial properties and keep our digestive system healthy too. Even though not many people are fond of this vegetable, it is a wondrous vegetable with a horde of benefits.

Brinjal in Fish Paste @ RM 1.50 per piece

Although I not very fond of it but I do ensure to make it a part of my diet for its health values. I think the only time I probably enjoy eating it if it cooked stuffed with the fish paste, just like the yong tau foo. Wai Kee's stuffed brinjal always tops in my list as it's really value for money. Big cuts of brinjal is stuffed overflowing with the smooth fish paste.

Hakka style cooked in the brown bean paste or tauchu really brings out the flavour. It is really good and pretty much the same as the way my mom cooks it. I usually 'tau pau' or packed the yong tau foo back for dinner and eat these with rice during my lazy weekends when I refused to cook.

Crispy Fried Foo Chuk with Fish Paste
@RM 1.50 per piece

Foo chuk or bean curd is very versatile food. Some may used it for vegetarian dishes, cooked in porridge, stew with ginger chicken, dessert - foo chuk tong shui among others. Best for me is when it stuffed with fish paste and make into the yong tau foo.

Wai Kee's foo chuk is deliciously well seasoned. You can taste the flavour of the fish, thefreshness of the raw ingredients. Freshly stuffed, then deep-fried or boiled, the pieces of Yong Tau Foo at Wai kee screamed of utmost freshness and good, home made quality. Braised with the brown bean paste (tauchu paste) for the best combination; bringing out the flavour of the stuffed fish paste.

Ngau Kee - Beefy-li-cious Beef Balls @Tengkat Tong Shin Bukit Bintang by FollowMeToEatLa

Bouncy Beef Balls - Ngau Kee Beef Noodles in Bukit Bintang Klang Valley
Bouncy Beef Balls

This is by far one of the best beef balls in town. I have tried the Zhing Kong Beef Noodles next to Klang bus stand but it's failed to amaze me. It lacked in the flavour & bounciness. Well, sometimes it's hard to explain, but for foodie like me you'll sense it ... once it gets into the mouth!

On the contrary, Ngau Kee's beef balls is deliciously springy. It's firm, tender and super tastywhen eaten together with the beefy soup. Basic combination of chopped spring onions, and coriander as well as a dash of pepper to complement the already piping hot and flavourful broth punctuated with a robust beefy taste pleases me the most.

Real comfort food. Forget about the noodles, try ordering a whole bowl of 10 beef balls, (oh yes, I mentioned 10, not 6) and savour them slowly, one by one, bit by bit ... relish the bite into these tasty morsel. Guaranteed to be your most enjoyable eating experience that you will never forget.

Mmmmm ...... I'm getting hungry again from all these reviews and I want to eat my Ngau Kee beef balls tonight. Oh gosh!

Beefy-li-cious Noodles @Ngau Kee at Tengkat Tong Shin, Bukit Bintang by FollowMeToEatLa

As as to date, this is my all time favourite beef noodles in KL. You see, I set a high benchmark for any beef noodles I eat nowadays. I'm pretty sure you would agreed with me once you have tasted this Ngau Kee's noodles.

The minced beef sauce as well as the beef balls plays an important part in determining how tasty it can be. The type of noodles that goes well with beef is usually the wanton or mee hoon (rice vermicelli). Firstly, the wanton noodles must be cook or blanch to the right texture resulting into a springy and firm texture. Must not too soft or with the kan sui taste too. The rice vermicelli or better known as mee hoon is also a good to eat as it absorb the beefy sauce thus making the noodles very flavourful.

I was introduced to this awesome noodles many years ago by my boyfriend (now husband) when we go dating at Sungai Wang Plaza. The taste have not changed but the price has indeed increased in leaps and bounds, okay blame that on inflation.

Delicious Beef Noodles - Ngau Kee Beef Noodles in Bukit Bintang Klang Valley
   Delicious Beef Noodles

The best way to savour the Ngau Kee Noodles is to try out the Dry version. The wanton noodles goes well with the flavourful and savoury minced beef. I'm always amaze by the generous toppings of this wickedly delicious minced meat on the noodles. I would usually asked for more chopped celery leaves & spring onions for my noodles as they really bring out the wonderful taste too. An excellent combination that almost never fails!

The soup was equally fragrant too. You can smell them from afar, that's how you can distinguish a good one from the rest. Infused with aromatic spices and beef bones which penetrate fully into a thick beefy soup, it leaves you with a lingering taste. The home made beef balls are quite large in size - meaty and bouncy, one class above the rest that I tried or tested. Don't forget to eat this with their amazing sweet & sourish chilli sauce as they really goes well together.

Well, Ngau Kee Beef noodles was an easy, delicious, comfort food that have maintained its quality and standard through the years, and for that, it gets a thumbs up from me .....

No More Value For Money - Banana Leaf Rice@Sri Paandi (Sek 11) by FollowMeToEatLa

Latest Food Bill - Crazy Price Increased for all - Sri Paandi Restaurant in Petaling Jaya (South) Klang Valley
Latest Food Bill - Crazy Price Increased for all

This is my latest update of my makan trip to one of my favourite banana leaf rice restaurant in town. Although the food served here is still tasty, real authentic Chettinah dishes, I was taken by surprise with the price increase on my recent visit. Now, the basic vegetarian meal set costs RM 5.00 with an increase of 50 cents. You guys must be thinking that it's still okay as compared to many others places.

Basic Set RM5 + RM 1.50 + RM 2 = RM8.50 now - Sri Paandi Restaurant in Petaling Jaya (South) Klang Valley
Basic Set RM5 + RM 1.50 + RM 2 = RM8.50 now

The worst has yet to come. They got greedy as I think business getting too good for them, they started to charge for extra toppings or add ons of any vegetables dishes. The same goes for rice too! Good gracious me! :-(

You see, the RM 5.00 set now ONLY comes with 1 extra topping of rice & 2 toppings of any vegetables. Subsequent 'tambah nasi or sayur' comes with a charge of RM 1.00 onwards. Be careful with the papadoms too, I was charged additional RM 1 for asking for more papadoms! Besides that, the tairu or yoghurt are not longer part of the set as they are charging an extra of RM 1.50 per bowl.

Well, as far as I know (from this terrible experience) the only thing that have no extra charge are the curry fish, curry chicken or dhall gravies. I'm still quite mad with the whole new pricing. Boycotting Sri Paandi for the time being and I'm on a serious look out and hunt for another 'tasty & cheap' Chettinad restaurant to satisfy my cravings for Indian food.

Best Food Of Yu Yi Bak Kut Teh @Jalan Kuching Segambut KL by FollowMeToEatLa

Apart from the signature dishes of Bak Kut Teh, Yu Yi expanded their menu to a variety of chicken, pork stew, steam fish and even mushroom dishes to please the patrons. Following are the rest of noteworthy dishes that I found quite palatable.

.Savoury Abalone Slice Taufoo - Bak Kut Teh Yu Yi in Segambut Klang Valley
Savoury & Nutritious Abalone Slice Taufoo

I loved my taufu cooked in any style - be it in soup, stew, fried, steam or even simply eaten with soya sauce or oyster sauce. It's a very versatile food. Rich in high-quality protein as well as low in calories and has no saturated fat or cholesterol too. It is also a good source of B-vitamins and iron. I was quite excited when was served this appetizing dish that nite.

The freshly house made taufu was smooth and melt-in-your-mouth soft, and the delicious gravy was simply irresistible. Cooked together with julienned carrots, sliced shiitake mushrooms and imitation abalone made from squid sitting on a bed of chinese mustard (bok choy) well seasoned with special chinese wine, Siew Heng, this simple & tasty dish can win over my heart any day, any time! I will definitely come back for more ...

Original Flavour Yam Chicken - Bak Kut Teh Yu Yi in Segambut Klang Valley
   Original Flavour Yam Chicken

My visit or Makan Ventures to this Bak Kut Teh Yuyi Restaurant brought a lot of pleasant surprises for me. First, was the unique way of eating the crispy fried abalone by dipping it first in the herbal soup. Secondly, was this unassuming yam & chicken dish. I have eaten the stewed yam with pork (woo tao kau yok) a popular Hakka dish numerous time during my dinner trip with family or at chinese wedding dinners too. But, this is something very different from what I imagine it to be.

RM12 for a plate of goodness - Bak Kut Teh Yu Yi in Segambut Klang Valley
RM12 for a plate of goodness

Yam was cooked by stewing it till soft and mushy for the melt in the mouth experience. Well seasoned chicken was infused with the fragrant curry leaves, excellent combination with wonderful texture from the meat and yam. Something different, unexpecting tasty, though doesn't look good in picture ... a noteworthy dish to check out when visiting this restaurant.

RM 9 for bowl in claypot - Bak Kut Teh Yu Yi in Segambut Klang Valley
Pork Leg in Thick Soy Sauce
RM 9 for bowl in claypot

Pork Leg was never my favourite due to the thick layer of unhealthy fat and skin. Being on a strict no fat diet, be it the chicken skin or pork skin, these parts can never come in contact with me. Under circumstances, I will gracefully 'dissect' the fat or skin from the meat, leaving the lean meat to be eaten. My pork loving friend will always say " Aiyah, Lilly ... whylah you don't how to enjoy this dish? You're taking away the best part of the meat. So sayanglah !"

Gelatinous Pork Leg in Thick Soy sauce - Bak Kut Teh Yu Yi in Segambut Klang Valley
Gelatinous Pork Leg in Thick Soy sauce

Well, you see for this particular dish, I would rated it average because the sauce was not up to the mark. Can't taste the intense flavouring that usually comes with this dish. It came off as mild tasting dish for me. Apart from that, the lean part of the meat was tender and soft, not rubbery. Serving is good. Overall, it's still a good dish for those who loved pig skin including the chewy gelatinous tendons.

Star of the night was without a doubt, the 'Dried Bak Kut Teh' the restaurant specialty. It was very aromatic and savoury. The ribs was top-notch and the gravy was splendid, a wonderful accompaniment with white rice. The julienned cuttle fish brings out the smoky flavour topped with some finely chopped spring onions, the whole dish was just heavenly.

Bavarian Bierhaus : Heavenly Dessert - Italian Tiramisu @Jalan Pinang by FollowMeToEatLa

 Dreamy Dessert : Italian Tiramisu

Wrapping up the meal was none other than Tiramisu, a dessert synonymous with Italian cuisine. Tiramisu meaning "pick me up" or "lift me up" in the Italian language. It is made of ladyfingers (light and sweet sponge cakes shaped like a large finger dipped in coffee), layered with a whipped mixture of egg yolks and mascarpone cheese and flavoured with cocoa.

RM 18 per serving

This clever combination of sweet mascarpone cheese, lady finger, coffee and cacao grappa was wickedly delicious. It is bound to leave any dessert lover wanting more. I have to admit that I’m very picky when it comes to dessert, but this has totally won my heart because I couldn’t stop eating it.

The Mascarpone cheese was very smooth in texture with no lumps or graininess. An intensely rich Italian triple cream dessert cheese, milky and slightly sweet, sometimes with a tangy finish. I was deeply impressed. Feeling satiated ending with such an unforgettable sweet note of the Italian Tiramisu.

Wowed Over Sweet Treat of German Pancake @Bavarian Bierhaus Jalan Pinang KL by FollowMeToEatLa

    Sweet treat of German Pancake

To end our evening, we were presented with German Pancake. A pleasing-to-the-eye lightly browned pancakes, served with vanilla ice cream, freshly cuts of kiwis, strawberries and cantaloupe. The girls were pretty excited just by looking this 'picture pretty' desserts. Shrieks and all the oohs-aahs were heard even before the tasting began.

   RM 8 per serving

Simply irresistible! These were the best pancakes that I've ever tasted. They were very fluffy and had a melt-in-your-mouth texture. Crispy on the outside and soft on the inside. Chef Zampar later explained that he lightly fry the pancake for the added crisp. The creamy ice cream went well with the pancake and the fruits lent a refreshing and fruity taste too.

Well, what a great way to end our delicious hearty dining experience at Bavarian Bierhaus !

Gastronomic Adventure @ Bavarian Bierhaus Jalan Pinang KL by FollowMeToEatLa

Photo of Bavarian Bierhaus in Kuala Lumpur City Center Klang Valley

Bavarian Bierhaus offers modern Bavarian food and drinks ranging from hearty tastes of highly appetizing meals such as Crispy German Pork Knuckle, Pork Ribs, Berlin Steak, Mixed Sausages Platter, Bavarian Pork Salad among others. The restaurant’s Italian Executive Chef, Massimo Zampar produced a contemporary Bavarian menu to tantalize the taste buds and create a complete Bavarian experience.

'Bavaria' is the name of a state in Germany and 'Bierhaus' meant 'Beer house' in the German language. The Bavarians are also known as some of the world's most beer-loving people with an average annual consumption of 170 litres per person. They tend to place a great value and emphasis on good food and drink.

This restaurant is strategically located in the heart of Kuala Lumpur City Centre at Wisma UOA II, KLCC. This beer house exudes a relaxed and welcoming ambience that has made it a popular dining and drinking destination for both city office workers and the residents of the adjacent upscale serviced residences in KLCC district. Offering a multifaceted concept, combining a gourmet all-day dining restaurant, with a vibrant bar and wine post. While having the biggest selection of Paulaner Family Beers in KL, this is a good place to chill out with a few friends to savour their wide range of wines and beer.

As a prelude to dinner, Chef Zampar whipped up the 3 salubrious salads for us to savour - Bavarian Pork salad, Prawn salad and Caesar salad. I have to say that these crunchy starters were photogenic, well presented, looks good and taste good too.

 Bavarian Pork Salad
RM 24

The Bavarian Pork Salad was my favourite among the three. I found this Pork Salad simply appetizing. Loved the smokey saltish taste of crispy bacon and well marinated grilled pork escalope that accompanied it. Prefect combo of romaine lettuce, purple cabbage and cherry tomatoes tossed with Bavarian mustard, warm haloumi and olive oil. Great dish for those on diet as it's as good as a complete meal.It has the protein and greens all in one!

 Prawn Salad
RM 26

Equally appetising Prawn Salad. Generous serving of the succulent grilled prawns and bacon tossed with the fresh greens, apple slices, onion rings, julienned purple cabbage, buffalo mozzarella and roasted pine nuts.

Caesar Salad
RM 22

The Caesar Salad was given a new twist here. Freshly served with crisp romaine lettuce and hard boiled Omega eggs lightly coated in a garlic dressing, topped with parma ham, crispy croutons and grated pecorino cheese. If just in case you're wondering what is this 'Pecorino cheese'.... Well, Pecorino is the name of a family of hard Italian cheeses made from ewe's milk or sheep milk.

Premium Platter of Mixed Cold Cuts - Bavarian Bierhaus in Kuala Lumpur City Center Klang Valley
Premium Platter of Mixed Cold Cuts
RM 88

For starter, we savoured upon a platter of specially selected premium cold cuts which includes Parma ham, Salami Milano, Calabra (Spicy Salami), Coppa, Mortadella and Pancetta. An Aufschnitt Platter is a tray of cold cuts, usually accompanied with bread, butter, and pickles, onions, or other vegetables. Cold cuts are precooked or cured meat, often very large sausages, ham or meat loaves, that are sliced and usually served cold on sandwiches or on party trays.

Parma Ham or Prosciutto di Parma is a dry-cured ham from central and northern Italy. The Milano Salami, among the most popular in Italy is prepared with lean pork and bacon coarsely minced and moderately flavoured with salt and aromas, seasoned for a period varying from 3 to 6 months. Calabra spicy salami is a spicy Italian salami made from lean pork and chilli peppers. Coppa, is a traditional Italian cold cut (salume) made from dry-cured whole pork shoulder or neck. Mortadella is a large Italian sausage or cold cut made of finely hashed or ground, heat-cured pork sausage. Pancetta is an Italian form of bacon. It is pork belly that has been salt cured and spiced, and dried for about three months but usually not smoked.

Fresh Ravioli Pasta
RM 38

Chef Zampar prepared a plate of Fresh Ravioli Pasta with plush spinach and creamy ricotta, cooked and served with house-made tomato sauce and sweet basil leaves to sway our taste buds to another flavours. Vegetarian dishes may not be big on my list but its combination of creamy ricotta and finely grated pecorino, the dish was mouthwatering.

Mix German Sausages Platter
RM 82

My other favourite was the delicious Mix German Sausages Platter. Great dish for meat lovers. Premium offerings of meaty delicacies of German sausages - Bratwurst, Thuringer, Neurberger, German pepper to Hungarian sausage and the Emmenthaler from Switzerland with grilled bacon. Served with complementary dipping sauces of roasted-garlic mayo, german curry ketchup, mustard and habanero mayo to complete this sausage-li-cious meal. I was wowed over with wide selection and to be honest, all of them are equally tasty and extremely flavourful. Perfect to be eaten with mashed potatoes or salad. This adds up to my list of comfort food!

Well, Bavarian Bierhaus is certainly a great German restaurant to look for fabulous food, great beers and relaxing ambience ... So enjoy!

Porky-li-cious Meals @ Bavarian Bierhaus Jalan Pinang KL by FollowMeToEatLa

Pork lovers looking for a hearty, well-prepared meal should stop by Bavarian Bierhaus, located at Wisma UOA Jalan Pinang in Kuala Lumpur.

Known for their wide selection of pork dishes that includes the Signature Pork Knuckle, pork sausage, pork ribs and sizzling pork steak as well as for bavarian pork salad. Perfect flavour of oven roasted pork ribs.

Standing Out: Flavourful Pork Ribs

The finest pork ribs are richly seasoned, well marinated, roasted to perfection. Wonderfully juicy and tender, with the sweet and tangy BBQ pineapple sauce waking up our taste buds. The accompanying sauce with diced pineapples was sweet, bringing out the best in the ribs. Served with warm soft cannellini beans and mashed potatoes, this finger licking good ribs is a real value for money. A full rack of 12 ribs good enough to be shared by 3-4 pax costing only RM 74.

Generous serving : Crispy Pork Knuckle

One of the must have German dishes is the Pork Knuckle, which is boiled, air dried and then roasted. According to Chef Zampar, he uses special broth to boil the knuckle for the added flavour, before roasting it in the oven making the skin crispy. This results in juicy meat, with a crispy, golden brown outer skin and crust. The meat was very tender, flavourful and aromatic, and make for a hearty meal. Served with combination of savoury pork sauce, sauerkraut and boiled potatoes, it's comes with the price of RM70.

Grilled to perfection: Berlin Steak for RM38

Next, be sure to try the Berlin Steak, a grilled pork steak accompanied by bacon wrapped asparagus and steak fries, balanced with the creamy spinach for a perfect meal. No worries, this is a strictly 'fork & knife' dish, does not require one to eat with hands as compared to the two earlier dishes.

Sauerkraut packed with good bacteria

Healthy serving of Sauerkraut with the pork knuckle. Sauerkraut is made by lactic fermentation, an age-old technique now in vogue for its health benefits. Made from a combination of shredded cabbage, packed in layers of salt and spices and allowed the mixture to ferment. Rather, it has a comfortingly soft texture, and a mild acidity that makes it an ideal foil for fattier meats, and eating probiotic foods is a great way to improve digestive function.

Ideal side dish of sautéed potatoes with green peas, wonderful complement to pork dishes.
