A steamboat is such great fun. Chinese-style hot pot or steamboat is great fun for all, especially families and friends. I always enjoyed eating steamboat because it's a healthy meal & low in fat content.
Here in Tai Tao Steamboat, I believed many customers are most drawn to this restaurant for their special steamboat. Customers get a choice of their signature porridge soup, clear soup or tom yam for those who like it more pedas. My favourite this time is the porridge soup as it makes a refreshingly different meal to cook food in this way.
A good crowd even on weekdays
This restaurant is located in Bandar Menjalara, Kepong. Basically, it's an open air place, very spacious and quite airy corner lot shop. Good place for family gathering or friends hang out on weekends. Getting to the place during after office hours maybe a hassle as there are massive traffic no matter where you coming from. So, I would advise coming here on weekends only instead of the usual weekdays.

Money for Value - The Signature Set
RM 16.80
It has fresh prawns, fish fillet, squid, fish noodles, fish paste, fish ball, bean curd, fried tofu skin, black fungus, ,eggs, mee hoon, yee mee noodles plus lots of vegetables . The price @RM 16.80 per single set is real value for money as many other places do not offer such big juicy prawns, chunky slices of fish nor squid in their regular set. Many short changed the customers by substituting with fish ball, foo chuk, taufoo or many kinds of processed food.
Big juicy & succulent fresh sea prawns
The prefect combination of clear soup & porridge soup
These generous serving of corn is great especially for the clear soup. Healthy & good to eat, the soup tasted awesome bringing out a hint of sweetness of the corn to end my satisfying meal.
For steamboat meals, dips are of great importance. Here, you get 3 choices of garlicky chilli sauce, green chillies sauce and their special home made 'Spicy Sate Sauce'. Mr.Tai Tao, the owner shared with us that this sauce is specially made with evaporated milk instead of the usual santan for the special unique flavour. I'm a great fan of any satay sauce, so I was practically eating them out of the sauce plate rather than using it as dipping sauce! Maybe when I can back again, I might try to 'tau pau' some back home, well ... of course with permission & kind courtesy of the ever friendly, Mr. Tai Tao!
Simply a Must-Try item - Succulent & Fresh Paddy Frogs
RM20
The freshness of the padi field frogs was top-notch and a wonderful accompaniment with the porridge. I was amazed by the generous serving that costs a mere RM 20 per plate.
Ala Carte Selection of Fresh Gingery Fish Slices with Ginger & Spring Onions
RM6
What I liked about Tai Tao's ala carte dishes is that they're very generous with their serving. I get to savour large chunky pieces of dory fillet cooked in the flavourful porridge. The fillet with a delicate texture, went well with shredded ginger. I topped it up with lots chopped spring onion & Voila! I made my self a yummy, tummy-warming fish porridge. Good enough for little toddlers as it's the boneless fish fillet.
Ala Carte Speciality the Drunken Prawn
RM20
Best when cook together with the clear soup. I would like to suggest to Mr.Tai Tao that perhaps he could use some kampung chicken marinated in wine & served it in the similar style too. With this, we can have the 'Special Drunken Chicken', a nutritious confinement dish taken by post-natal mother for good health & to promote blood circulation, provide nourishment and stimulate energy.
Ala Carte Sliced Pork
RM8
Good to eat when with the porridge too & the best part is that it doesn't curl up into tiny pieces that leave nothing to chew. Deliciously tender, not tough it practically melts in my mouth.
Must Try Dish: Drunken Prawn
This signature ala-carte dish was highly recommended by the owner, Mr Tai Tao himself. I was really excited to try out the Special Drunken Prawn offered by here which one of their signature food on the must try list. I believe this is probably the only place in town with this version, many thanks to him who came out with this brilliant idea! A very chatty & friendly man indeed as he had no qualms in sharing his knowledge & truly passionate about his food.
Fresh Succulent Prawns
Dish was truly a new twist to eating steamboat. Fresh sea prawns are infused with the goodness of 3 types of wines, mainly the white wine, yellow wine & aromatic Shao xing wine. Superb concoction accompanied with finely shredded ginger & black fungus (mok yee). Juicy and succulent prawns were finger licking good. The aroma itself was just mouth-watering! It was bursting with wine flavour upon each bite. I could never get over the fact of slurping warm and tasty soup topped with some slices of ginger and mok yee. You can actually feel every spoonful goes into the stomach to warm up the tummy. Price wise was a steal, very reasonable plus value for money, paying only RM20 for 8 XXL size prawns. Highly recommended dish @Tai Tao if you're looking for something new to try out instead of the usual tom yam or clear soup.
