GERAI MAKANAN SAI KEE, Jalan Sultan - The Arrogant & Expensive Stall In Chinatown ~ Not Worth the Hype!

Disappointing First Visit
Gerai Makanan Sai Kee, Jalan Sultan In Chinatown
I recently had my first dining experience at Gerai Makanan Sai Kee, a long-standing eatery with over 60 years of heritage, tucked away in a back alley off Jalan Sultan in Chinatown, KL. Sadly, my visit left me more frustrated than fulfilled.

Remember This Lady Face - The Daughter-in-Law Of The Owner!

We arrived as a group of four, hoping to try their traditional Cantonese fare, which has gained quite a following online. However, the experience started off on the wrong foot. The lady boss told us to wait 1 hour and 15 minutes for a table in quite a stern tone. When I politely asked if it might be quicker, she simply insisted, rather loudly, that it wouldn’t be. We were asked to place our order and return later, as we couldn’t wait there.

Ironically, we received a call 30 minutes later saying our table was ready.

When we returned, we were led to a small table at the very end of the alley — dark, uncomfortable, and completely uninviting. I approached the lady boss to request a brighter seating spot, but she ignored me completely and gestured for one of her older staff to handle the request.

That level of disregard was rude and shocking. Thankfully, the elderly helper was kind and promised to move us once another table became available — the only saving grace that evening.

Now let’s talk about the food and value: We ordered:

Braised Fish with Tofu in Bean Paste
RM50

Brinjal with Fish Paste
RM32

Sweet & Sour Pork
RM30

Stir-Fried Sweet Potato Leaves
RM16

4 bowls of rice
RM8

Total is RM 136 for 4 pax. No receipt, just a chit to list the food eaten!

The food was disappointingly salty, especially the Sweet and sour Pork, which came in a small portion despite its price. We found a big chunk of fermented bean paste, 'Fu Yee', stuck to the Sweet Potato leaves. None of the dishes wowed us, and the high sodium made them hard to enjoy. Rice is priced at RM 2 per bowl.

To make things worse, there was:
  • No pricing listed on the menu (major red flag)
  • No receipt provided after payment
  • Uncomfortable environment — hot, stuffy, and without any fans
  • Cleanliness was subpar, with the strong alleyway smell adding to the discomfort
  • Noisy and disorganised service, made worse by the poor attitude of the lady boss

Given all that, RM136 felt like a rip-off for what was essentially a meal at a makeshift stall in a hot back lane. For that price, there are many other places in KL offering far better food, environment, and service.

Despite the hype on YouTube and TikTok, this place is overrated and overpriced. I left disappointed, and frankly, a little angry. Sometimes, viral doesn’t mean value.

If you’re planning a visit, manage your expectations — or better yet, spend your money elsewhere.
