Chinese New Year is the most anticipated festival of the Chinese calendar, it is a time for reconnecting with friends and family and sharing precious time together. Intercontinental Kuala Lumpur is the perfect place for families to create memorable Spring Festival moments and celebrate new beginnings. 

Thanks to a wonderful invitation from Intercontinental Kuala Lumpur, I was at Tao Chinese Cuisine to sample some of their festive Chinese New Year dishes curated to welcome the Lunar New Year 2020.

This year, Chef Wong brings his creations to life by emphasizing on authentic tastes of quintessential Chinese New Year seasonal flavours. A perfect blend of traditional dishes infused with a modern presentation.


The Chinese New Year nine-course set menus, Harmonious, Opulent and Abundance are priced at RM 1,988, RM 2,388 and RM 2,788 respectively. Dishes highlights are Double-Boiled Ginseng Soup, Tao’s Hong Kong-style Roasted Duck, Steamed White Sultan Fish, Double-Boiled Bird’s Nest and more.  

Soft Shell Crab Yee Sang with Hakka Lei Cha Sauce

The must-try is definitely their Soft Shell Crab Yee Sang with Hakka Lei Cha Sauce. Lei Cha literally translates to pound or crushed tea and it is made from ingredients including tea leaves, herbs and nuts.

It is considered a highly nutritional dish with many health benefits. Having this in mind, Chef Wong curated a special Lei Cha sauce to serve with the Yee Sang this year, the sauce comprises of mint, basil, long jing tea, Pu'er tea and sesame.

During the media preview, we were treated to the Opulent Set priced at RM 2,388 per table of 10 pax. The Chinese New Year Set features a starter course of  Soft Shell Crab Yee Sang with Hakka Lei Cha Sauce Platter with a 9-Course menu.

Guests may also enjoy a selection of delicately crafted a la carte and dim sum items, including Sautéed Scallop with Truffle Sauce, Stir-Fried Black Angus Tenderloin, Baked Baby Abalone Puff with Foie Gras, Unagi Pan-Fried Glutinous Rice Roll with Cheese, to name a few.

Set menus and Yee Sang menu are available from 30 December 2019, Chinese New Year Ala Carte Menu from 24 January 2020 and Dim Sum menu from 25 January 2020 onwards. All menus will be served till 8 February 2020. For those who are planning for an intimate gathering with family, friends or colleagues can opt for our private dining room which can fit up to 38 persons.

In celebration of the auspicious season, Serena Brasserie will also be featuring an array of authentic Chinese dishes from 25 January till 27 January 2020. A complimentary platter of Salmon Yee Sang will be served on each table.   

For larger business associates seeking a more extravagant feast in our banquet halls, they offer three sets of menu with delicacies including Salmon Yee Sang, Steamed King Tiger Grouper, Braised Sea Cucumber, Double-boiled Snow Bird’s Nest, priced at RM 1,688 onwards per table of ten, including unlimited soft drinks and Chinese tea and a special Chinese New Year door gift for guests. A complimentary barrel of Tiger beer will be offered for every confirmed booking of 10 tables.
