Calling All Durian Lovers All Around The World! Have you heard of a 'DURIAN UNIVERSITY' before? Yes, you heard me right! There is this newly established World's First Durian University called DURIANBB UNIVERSITY, probably the world's first durian university located at this part of the world in Raub, Pahang in Malaysia.

 Auntie Lilly's Maiden Trip To DurianBB University 

Thanks to a gracious invitation from DurianBB Park, my hubby and I were invited to experience a fun and interesting educational day trip durian farm tour to DurianBB University. It was indeed an eye-opening experience for many of us as we have not heard of such a place called 'The Durian University'.

  

Of course, we were pretty excited when told about having to take part in all kinds of activities with a full itinerary of durian related 'duties'. Upon completion a series of arduous training, participants will be officially be awarded and known as a 'DurianBB Expert'! Sounds fun already, right?

Leading across 10 acres of durian farmland in Pahang, DurianBB has established the world's first durian university, allowing visitors to experience the process of durian farming and the opportunity to taste the freshest durians.

Over 300 durian trees aged over 30 have been planted at DurianBB University. The durian farm is home now to four durian cultivars, namely the legendary Musang King, XO (D24), Tekka and the most precious Black Thorn. The farm, now a campus, is now open to visitors.

Upon arrival at DurianBB University, we were welcomed warmly by the man of the day, the charming and affable, Professor Paul Yee himself.

Our educational durian tour was filled with memorable experience starting off with a short talk by Professor Paul Yee on durian farming, growth stages to identifying the many varieties of durian species within the farm.

Dedicated Professor Paul Yee was quick to share his vast durian knowledge with us as he took us on a short tour around the farm showing us how to identify each species of the Musang King, XO and D24 durian trees.

Next, we move on to having hands-on experience of picking, cleaning durians, and experiencing what it takes to harvest the best fruits all in a day. At the farm, everyone is required to be in full gear, sporting a bright yellow helmet to protect our heads from falling durians. (durian jatuh).

Durians Are Every Where At The Farm

Oh yes, the fun part begins now as each of us had a basket carrier to our back where we went around searching and picking up durians that fell of the trees on that day. Reminds me of Easter Day, where we went on the Easter egg hunting activities.

Helmet, Sunnies, Comfortable Attire & Good Pair Of Shoes

Do come in comfortable and cooling attire with a good pair of walking shoes as this your requires a fair bit of walking around the durian farm for a short tour and some durian-picking activity carrying a rattan basket.

Sweating buckets under the hot sun, my hubby and I managed to find many fallen ripe durians under the trees around the farm although it's not the peak season now in October. It was absolutely fun to go around the farm picking up durians, just like finding 'gold bars' to me!

After a hard day's work, we finally get to enjoy a glorious feast of the freshest durians. Nothing beats the pleasure of tasting freshly picked durians from the farm especially those that we personally picked!

Durians are best eaten fresh, preferably within the first few hours falling from the trees, for one to enjoy the full robust flavours of the fruit. Everyone had a great time feasting on the Musang King, XO and XO (D24), especially those that we hand-picked it ourselves, right?

Right Techniques To Open Durians

Moving on, Professor Yee also demonstrates the right techniques of handling durians, at the same time explain the varying flavours and subtle nuances in different cultivars. Participants are most welcome to try their hands at opening up durians.

A 5Kg Durian - Bigger Than My Face 

For me, this first time in my life, I had my first-hand experience opening up a Musang King durian. I usually eat and clean up and have never attempted to open any durians leaving the 'tough' task to my hubby or someone else!

Actually, it doesn't look that tough to break open these spikey King Of The Fruits and in fact, with the right techniques using the right tools, I did it quite effortlessly! 

Oh yes, did I mentioned that upon arrival, each participant will receive a DurianBB textbook containing all kinds of valuable information ones need to know about this delicious fruit.

  

 Graduation Ceremony Time

Our tiring but fun day at DurianBB University ended with a 'Graduation Ceremony' where each participant will receive a DurianBB Expert certificate, awarded by Professor Paul Yee himself. The certificate of graduation states:

"After a series of arduous training, ............................ is now officially a DurianBB Expert, who can take up the responsibilities of picking, selecting, identifying, opening up durians; and above all - the great duty of eating durians".

Overall, this was a fun and memorable day indeed for us as we did enjoy ourselves immensely with this remarkable and well-planned durian farm tour organised by DurianBB University. Not only did we get to indulge ourselves crazy over the endless treats of fresh durian straight from the farm, but it was also fruitful and educational as we learned so much about the wonderful prized fruit.

Apart from that, I made a lot of new friends as we get to chill and hang out with the rest of the participants over the durian tour, durian picking session and durian feasting time.
