KEDAI KOPI HAI PENG  KOPITIAM AT KEMAMAN TERENGGANU

Kedai Kopi Hai Peng or Hai Peng Kopitiam in Kemaman, Terengganu is known for its aromatic coffee, nasi dagang bungkus, charcoal toasted bread and buns since 1940. Located in the small Chukai town in Kemaman, the old-style Kopitiam setting gives the place its unique charm.

Many even say the coffee station is the most famous tourist attraction to look out for in Kemaman, Terengganu. I was surprised by the crowd during my first visit as it was packed with people even on a weekday afternoon.

Double Corner Shoplot Along Jalan Sulaiman

What makes this coffee shop unique and different from the rest was that it's owned and run by a Chinese family for generations serving local delights of Malaysian food to mostly the Malay community in Chukai in Kemaman for decades.

You can never miss this Kopitiam as it's located quite strategically across the parking lot on the main road along Jalan Sulaiman in this small Chukai town. Since it was my first visit to Kedai Kopi Hai Peng, I was looking forward to tasting all their signatures dishes to delight my senses.

Classic Decor With Marble Table Top With Wooden Chairs

My hubby who shares my love for local coffee and toast suggested we check out this famous old Kedai Kopi Hai Peng for our first pit stop on our way to Tanjung Jara Resort in Dungun.

 The One Page Simple Menu

Hubby read out the menu -  Roti Bakar? Nasi Lemak? Meehun Goreng Siam? Kopi? No further convincing needed upon hearing those magic words, I was starving since our morning drive from Kuala Lumpur.

Our First Order

This place operates on a self-service manner where patrons will choose and pick their Nasi Dagang Bungkus, meehun Goreng Siam and some local Malay kuih miuh laid on the table near the entrance of the shop.

Kopi Kemaman
RM 1.70

At 11.30am, the place was packed and there were several customers waiting for a table. Lucky for us, there's only two of us, so we opt for a tiny table for two by the verandah at the side of the shop. We ordered the Roti Bakar and of course, Hai Peng's famous Kemaman Coffee - one hot and another iced.

Kopi On Ice
RM 2.50

Hai Peng's coffee was something special - rich, smooth and aromatic just like how a good local coffee ought to be. I prefer the hot kopi as the iced ones will be diluted if you are not drinking it fast enough.

Nasi Dagang Bungkus With Ikan Tongkol
RM 2.80

Well, this is my first time tasting Nasi Dagang in a pre-packed version. The portion for the rice was little with around half a cup of rice if you compared to the regular nasi lemak bungkus. Nevertheless, since it was packed in banana leaf, the rice was smelling nice with the aroma of glutinous rice in daun pisang.

For RM 2.80 per pack, I think the price was slightly on a higher side for such a small portion of rice with local tuna. I find the tuna gravy was too sweet and not spicy, so it was just okay-okay for me.

 Meehun Goreng Siam
RM 2.50

Next, Meehun Goreng Siam could be a good option if you don't fancy the Nasi Dagang Bungkus. It was just nice - a pretty decent fried meehoon in sambal sauce with eggs, onions and sawi.

 Roti Bakar
RM 2.40

Hai Peng's Roti Bakar was good - Sandwiched between two thick slices of local bread, well-toasted with charcoal served with flavourful sweet kaya.

Nasi Lemak Hai Peng
RM 3

Hai Peng's menu carries dishes that are truly Malaysian favourites. Being a great fan of nasi lemak, I just had to order and try out their Nasi Lemak.

Hai Peng's nasi lemak biasa comes with a sizeable portion of fragrant and 'lemak' santan rice with sides of crispy ikan bilis, peanuts and half of a hard-boiled egg. Sambal was up to mark - on the sweet side and not too spicy.

We were stuffed after the last order for the nasi lemak which I can't resist. Wish we could try more as I noticed that many patrons had orders for the toasted buns and curry toast on other tables.

Anyway, it was nice to experience dining at Kedai Kopi Hai Peng, filling our tummy with nice coffee and delicious nasi lemak before we proceed our journey to Dungun - Tanjung Jara Resort!

Stay tuned as I shall be sharing more about my short getaway at Tanjung Jara Resort soon.
