SAVOUR FLAVOURS OF THAI CUISINE
FOR THAI-LICIOUS CHINESE NEW YEAR FESTIVE CELEBRATION
NONG & JIMMY Thai BBQ Seafood At Kampung Baru Ampang
NONG & JIMMY Thai BBQ Seafood has come a long way since I last visited their establishment more than 20 years ago in their longtime location at Taman Cahaya, Ampang. Famous and well-known to the many, they are one of the very few F&B players which specialise in Thai Barbeque seafood.
New Location At Kampung Baru Ampang
I was invited by my fellow foodie blogger, Logan Goh, a famous Chinese blogger from ILoveMsiaFood to check out their latest Chinese New Year menu specially created with a mouthwatering array of festive dishes featuring classic Thai cuisine. We were treated with lots of fresh seafood such as crabs, crayfish, Tilapia fish, Salmon Yee Sang and followed by their signature Thai desserts.

Chinese New Year Menu 2017
Nong & Jimmy, a family-run restaurant has managed to capture the essence of Thai cuisine, which is known for its extreme flavours - from tongue-scorching spiciness to simple yet decadently sweet desserts. For CNY festive menu, they are offering up to six menus for diners to pick from with prices as low as RM 188 for 2 to 4 pax and up to RM 598 for 8 to 10 pax.
Thai Inspired Salmon Lou Sang
Lou Sang is a must-have for any Chinese New Year celebration and Nong & Jimmy's version of Lou Sang comes with Thai must-have ingredients such as sour and raw shredded mango, ginger and pomelo, combined with the rest of the usual vegetable of carrot, radish, pickled vegetables, nuts, sesame seeds and seaweed.
What makes the Thai Inspired Salmon Lou Sang different from the rest is their housemade Lou Sang sauce - Sweet, sour and spicy all-in-together for the extra flavour. They even provided an extra super spicy chilli concoction for those wanting the kick of flame in the Thai Lou Sang!
Mix Kerabu
Moving on to the first dish - A colourful, refreshing and appetising starter of Mix Kerabu. Good choice with a combination of four varieties of Thai salad - Mango Salad, Vermicelli with Prawn Salad, Chicken Feet Salad and last but not least is the popular Raw Papaya Salad.
Their Thai Mango Salad is my top pick among the four. A mix of raw sour mango, green papaya and onions toss together with a small dose of lime, the fried crackers adds some crunch and unami flavour to the dish.
Chicken Feet Salad
Vermicelli with Prawn Salad
Raw Papaya Salad
Raw Papaya Salad appeals to me for its nutritious value - guilt-free eating with low calories salad of healthy sour green papaya with shredded carrots. I skipped both Chicken Feet Salad and Vermicelli with Prawn Salad as I dislike cold noodles and chicken skin.
Kam Heong Meat Crab
Starting off with new crab dish - Kam Heong Meat Crab. This is a winning dish that will surely appeal to any crab lovers. The freshness of the large meat crab was evident and well-cooked with the fragrant and addictive 'Kam Heong' style sauce of dried shrimp, curry powder and fragrant curry leaves.
Kam Heong Meat Crab is truly a speciality in Nong & Jimmy's seafood menu. An impressive dish that hits all the right spots with their almost perfect spicy and fragrant 'Kam Heong' style of crabs.
Deep-Fried Talapia With Mango Sauce
The Deep Fried Talapia With Mango Sauce is served with a healthy helping of raw mango, onions and chilli in a sourish spicy mango sauce. Firm and fresh, the talapia are well-fried - crispy on the outside while the mango adds some crunch and a light tang to the overall bland savouriness of the food.
To veer off the seafood trail, the Thai Cashew Chicken is a refreshing change. The chicken thigh meat was tender and juicy, coated and fried swimming in a pool of brown gravy with generous portion cashew nuts, scallions and onions.
Kung Poh Crayfish
Coming up next we were surprised with the Kung Poh Crayfish. Full-of-wok-hei, the crayfish was coated before deep fried and cooked in high heat - 'Kung Poh' style with delicious black sauce that warrants some nice warm white to go with!
Claypot Glass Noodles With Crab
Claypot Glass Noodles With Crab was suppose to be a simple yet flavoursome dish with the crab sauce dripping into the noodles to be fully adsorb by it. This dish didn't fare too well in my book as I have eaten much more better crab noodles dish before. The glass noodles were lacking the crab flavour although it was cooked together in the clay pot.
Red Ruby Dessert
RM 5
After serving of the fiery Thai dishes, no Thai meal is complete with desserts to soothe the spicy heat from the meal. So, our meal ended with a delicious light Red Ruby desserts, Thab Thim Krob. Although loaded with lots of glutinous pink water chestnuts, topped with jackfruits, the Red Ruby dessert didn't make the cut. What's lacking the creamy and rich coconut milk concoction in the dessert.
Mango Sticky Rice
RM 8
Lastly, we were treated to Mango Sticky Rice, a very sweet sticky rice which I can't eat at all. Maybe the Thai like their dessert very sweet and I not suited for it. However, the Thai mangoes were nevertheless quite sweet and tasty.
