Great Food, Great Taste, Great Thrill ~ Well, that's the tagline for this newly opened Chinese restaurant called HotPot Kitchen located in the New Wing of One Utama Shopping Centre. First of its kind in Klang Valley brandishing a new concept, where diners get to self-pick their favourite choice of ingredients that go into the cooking pot (hotpot), pick your level of spiciness and pay before being served with your choice of dishes.
HOTPOT KITCHEN OFFERINGS
HotPot Kitchen chooses a simple and practical approach to operate their business. Utilizing a self-service concept, diners basically DIY their own choice of dishes - select the meat and vegetables, choose the favourite sauce, pay up and wait to pick up their dishes when ready.
Latest Trend, Latest Concept Dining
Conceptualized based in response to the increasing popularity of buffet-style dining concept, HotPot Kitchen offers a perfected house made 'Ma Lat' Spicy sauce inspired by the well-loved flavours of Sichuan cuisine and Chongqing cuisine. From the mildly spicy to the fiery hot, there is something to suit every individual’s taste. Simple, Clean & No-Frills Decor
What I like about dining at HotPot Kitchen is that diners themselves get to determine the portion of meat or vegetables they wish to consume. Apart from that, we can handpicked our personal choice of meat and/or vegetables for a balanced meal while dining there. Even the vegetarians, can come by and pick up a plethora of fresh vegetables offered for the day to eat with rice or noodles too!
Buffet-Style - Daily Fresh & Clean Ingredients
The spread of choice ingredients available includes fresh seafood, succulent meats, healthy vegetables and delicate handmade fish cakes, meat rolls in addition to the staples such as rice and noodles. Fresh meats and vegetables are sourced daily to ensure freshness from the local wet market, therefore vegetables are on a rotational basis.
Pricing For The Ingredients By Weight
Vegetable Section
RM 3.99 Per 100 gm
Dining here is as easy as ABC. Get busy with the tongs, select the type and quantity that you can consume and place them in the vegetable silver bowl. The price is at RM 3.99 per 100gm regardless what the combination of vegetables. So guys, choose wisely ya!
My favourite picks for the day was, of course, the broccoli, mixed variety of mushrooms, sweet green pea, baby spinach, young shoots of kai lan, lotus slice, and their foo chok strips (imported from Singapore). These foo chok strips got me mistaken it for pasta, the flat-thick fettuccine instead.
Meat Section
RM 5.99 Per 100 gm
Next step, using another meat big bowl ~ come and select your choice of meat such as beef, chicken, smoked meat, pork shoulder loin, and pork belly.
Meat Section
RM 5.99 Per 100 gm
Follow by the rest of the selections including ham luncheon meat, pig intestine (Chee Tai Cheong), sausages, meatballs, crab stick, Chinese sausages (Lap Cheong), in-house made fish cakes, meat cakes (Yeong Lui) and many more.
Choices of Fish Cakes, Pork Rolls, Mixed Meat Rolls
RM 5.99 Per 100 gm
Oh yes, remember to try some of these tasty in-house handmade fish cakes, pork paste rolls and mixed meat rolls for they are really something different and unique which are definitely can't be found from anywhere else.
Our Meat Selection
After that, you can select the type of meats and the in-house made "Yeong Liu" from the next section in a separate bowl. The price for the meat section is at RM 5.99 per 100gm regardless what you take i.e. pork belly, beef, prawns and etc.
Finally, just proceed to the cashier counter for weighing in the chosen meat and vegetables. Take your pick of their two type of house-made sauce - Unique Platter (Non-Spicy) or the Ma Lat (Spiciness comes in 3 levels). I would suggest you try out Level 1 which is spicy enough for Malaysian palate, go for Level 2 or 3 if you are daring enough because Ma Lat sauce is very spicy, and numbing Chinese sauce made from Sichuanese peppercorn, chilli pepper and various spices simmered with oil.
Hot Pot Kitchen practices self-service, so there are no service charges that are levied on your total bill. Once your dishes are cooked you will need to pick up your meals at the cashier counter.
Unique Platter Dish
Unique Platter Dish is an ideal dish to order for those, not into any spicy or hot. Natural and fresh, cooked with a variety of vegetables including white radish, brinjal, bitter gourd. button mushroom, baby spinach, and kai lan with fresh prawns topped with fresh coriander leaves, crunchy roasted peanuts, and sesame seeds to enhance its flavour.
This mouth-watering and full of wok-hei Unique Platter dish is as good as home-cooked food would really go well with young children and older folks. Best eaten with a bowl of warm rice or if you like, get it fried together with your choice of noodles too.
Ma Lat Sauce Dish
Spicy Flavour (Level 2)
Next was the second spicy dish ~ Ma Lat Sauce Spicy Flavour (Level 2). This is truly a spicy yet flavourful dish, in fact, is one of my favourites as the special house-made Ma Lat sauce complemented every single ingredient in the dish.
The spicy sauce had a nice balance of flavour. I loved it especially with the generous topping of sesame seeds and roasted peanuts which I think it's unique and yet able bring the taste and texture another notch higher.
As a matter of fact, a group of Chinese students from Xiamen University longing for flavourful home-cooked, rustic food had gotten hooked on this dish as it reminds them so much of their home land cuisine.

Coming up next is the Fried Spicy Lala. This is a soon-to-be-introduced Ala carte seafood dish in their new menu. You can also choose your level of spiciness for the dish. For me, this is a little too hard to bear as it was way too spicy for my taste buds. Nevertheless, the sauce base is good and really goes well with the fresh clams.
Another point the owner wish to highlight is that all the meat and vegetables go thru an ozone sterilization treatment process before being served, as this ensures that pesticide and antibiotics are removed from the meat and vegetables. So diners can dine with ease at HotPot Kitchen with ~ No Pesticide, No Antibiotics, and No Hormones.
Diners can happily help themselves to the free flow of coffee from the coffee vending machines as these coffee treats are on the house. So you can have a dose of coffee treat before a meal to prepare your tummy for a tasty and satisfying meal or drink up after a meal to tone down and help you relax after a spicy hot meal.
