HONG KONG SHENG KEE DESSERT

Hong Kong Sheng Kee Dessert - A name synonymous with delectable flavours of Hong Kong cuisine offering a one-stop affordable dining with a menu of over 90 food and beverage items for diners to choose from. Part of a successful Singapore casual dining restaurant chain, Hong Kong Sheng Kee Desserts has expanded its wings to three outlets in Malaysia.

The chain recently opened its 3rd outlet at Paradigm Mall in April 2016 including IOI City Mall which opened in the third quarter of 2015 to serve the community in the area, as well as 16 outlets in Singapore. Check out their store location in Singapore and Malaysia right: HERE

Priding itself on the finest quality and ingredients, warm service and affordable prices, Hong Kong Sheng Kee is well known for presenting one of the biggest and most diverse spreads of authentic Hong Kong dishes and desserts.

Take your pick from their delectable savoury dishes of  HK Wanton Noodles, Braised Pork Belly with Mui Choy Rice and Carrot Cake; or simply have some steaming baskets of dim sum. Alternatively, those with a penchant for sweet flavours can indulge in a mindblowing selection of hot and cold desserts such as SK Mango Pomelo Sago, Sesame Paste and Osmanthus Jelly.

Whether you would like to take a break from your weekend shopping spree, if you’re enjoying a nice family meal on the weekends, or if you’re simply looking for a convenient lunch spot and meeting space during work hours, there is something for everyone.

We started our sampling of the tasty spread from their Snack Menu as follows:

STARTER
MUST-TRY DISH
 Bi Feng Tang Crispy Beancurd
RM 5.90

One of my top choices is Bi Feng Tang Crispy Beancurd. An aromatic dish of house made egg tofu dipped in the batter made from 7 different type of flavours.A unique and innovative dish, delicately deep-fried to perfection making a delightfully crisp sound when you bite into the tofu. Everyone at the table enjoys the unique and simple Bi Feng Tang Crispy Beancurd, flavourful taste and crispy texture on the outside and smooth and soft on the inside!

Crispy Beancurd Skin with Shrimp Cheong Fun
RM 7.90

Crispy Beancurd Skin with Shrimp Cheong Fun makes out of thin slices of the Cheong Fun or steamed rice sheets wrapped round the crispy roulade of shrimp and chicken in a deep-fried bean curd skin. The yellow streaks on the rice sheets come from the egg yolk and sprinkling of black sesame seeds enhance the presentation.

HK Carrot Cake
RM 5.90 / 3 pcs

Known to many dim sum lovers as radish cake, this is another must-ordered item on dim sum menus. This one is a study in texture – from the bits inside to the smooth layer just under the crunchy exterior.

Deep Fried Shrimp Wrapped In Crispy Beancurd Skin
RM 5.90 / 3 pcs

My kids just simply love the Deep Fried Shrimp Wrapped In Crispy Beancurd Skin.  It's an addictive dish coupled with the small serving portion you probably have to order a few plates to satisfy your palate. For more goodness, dip this in their mayo for an added kick.

Snowy Char Siew Bun
RM 6.90

Last but not least, Snowy Char Siew Bun is one of the few presented pork buns with baked crust, resulting in a pastry with a crisp, golden crust, and a light and fluffy centre enclosing a pocket of rich, sweet barbeque pork. The exterior is crumbly and fluffy and the inside - barbequed pork with oozing sauce - boasts a sweet-salty taste. ( Think of Tim Ho Wan Baked Bun with BBQ Pork )

MAINS

Moving to the mains, we are presented with an appetising spread of rice and noodles to fill our tummy. A quick check on their menu reveals that Hong Kong Sheng Kee Dessert have a wide menu of 6 choices of rice dishes and 15 types of noodles dishes to pick from.

Braised Pork Belly With Mui Choy Rice
RM 14.90

Braised Pork Belly With Mui Choy Rice is one of the best sellers at Hong Kong Sheng Kee Dessert. Chef Sit takes great pride in his authentic and traditional Hakka dish with a 20-year-old recipe from his family.

Using the best of ingredients is only half way to creating a great dish, the other half is on the skills and creativity of hardworking Chef Sit as shown in the making of this Hakka dish. Chef Sit shared with me the tedious processing of boiling, deep-frying, steaming to cutting the meat prior to serving with the preserved salted mustard leaves (mui choy).

Pork belly is boiled for around 45 minutes in bone stock flavoured with ginger, garlic and onions. Left to cool, the meat is punched with needles to release fat. Rice wine, spicy fermented bean curd and salted soya beans are used for marination before being deep-fried till crispy crackling.

According to Chef Sit, he imported the mui choy all the way from Cheung Chau, Hong Kong. Prior to cooking, it has to be soaked for 3 hours to remove the saltiness. Spices such as liquorice, cinnamon, star anise, cloves and cardamon are used to braise the mui choy together with Chinese wine and rock sugar.

 SK Signature Combination Noodle
RM 17.90

A combination of our top-selling Wanton, Dumpling, and Char Siew – all in one noodle dish. Comfort food material, hearty and tasty to the last strand of the springy egg noodles, you will be amazed by the juicy and succulent char siew (roast pork belly in sweet sauce), served together with the super-sized freshly made wontons. Serving portion is generous but wishes they could serve the dish with a bowl of soup, though.

Crispy Braised Chicken Drumstick with Fragrant Onion Dried Shrimp Rice
RM 15.90

Don't  be fooled by this assuming simple but super delicious Crispy Braised Chicken Drumstick with Fragrant Onion Dried Shrimp Rice. A generous portion of the whole chicken thigh is marinated and braised over long hours so that the flavours extracted are absorbed by the liquid.

Prior to serving, it's grilled for the added chars and crisp. The special white rice -  fragrant onion dried shrimp rice is a perfect match with the crispy braised chicken drumstick. Highly recommended dish to try for chicken rice lovers!

Supreme Congee with Sliced Fish, Prawn, Scallop and Sliced Mock Abalone
RM 17.90

Hong Kong Sheng Kee Dessert also have porridge lovers in mind. Choose from the simple and classic porridge dishes such as Sliced Fish Congee, Preserved Egg and Pork Ball Congee and if you're in the mood of some indulgence, order yourself a comforting and hearty big bowl of  Supreme Congee with Sliced Fish, Prawn, Scallop and Sliced Mock Abalone, just to spoil yourself silly!

Good to the last drop, the porridge is made up with the combination of fragrant rice and glutinous grains. A good porridge needs nothing less than 3 hours of slow fire simmer to achieve this smooth texture.

DESSERT

Black Glutinous Rice with Coconut Ice Cream and Honey Pearl
RM 9.90

Complete your satisfying meal with some great dessert choices such as the Black Glutinous Rice with Coconut Ice Cream and Honey Pearl, SK Mango Pomelo Sago and the warm Yuan Yang Paste.

My favourite pick among the 3 desserts has got to be the  Black Glutinous Rice with Coconut Ice Cream and Honey Pearl. I like the smooth creamy taste of the black glutinous rice with coconut ice cream that really complement each other. Apart from that, I enjoy biting into the honey pearl imported from Taiwan as it's soft but chewy, and springy between the teeth too.

 SK Mango Pomelo Sago
RM 8.90

SK Mango Pomelo Sago is another great creation from Chef Sit. A very popular dessert in Hong Kong, their version is made with fresh Thai Honey Mangoes. Mango is sourced with one from the Thailand for the special mango puree. Hearty pearl sago is added to enhance  the texture with pomelo sacs for the extra bitterness. The wholesome combination of these 3 ingredients has brought the dessert to a whole new level ~ unique yet tastily refreshing.

Yuan Yang Paste
RM 6.90

If the cold desserts do not appeal to you, come and try out their warm and smooth-tasting yin and yan combination of almond paste and black sesame for the natural goodness it brings.

DRINK
 Green Lime with Plum Juice
RM 5.90

Lychee Peppermint
RM 5.90

  1. Food quality is below average. Premium price but food is very disappointing. Feels cheated by its name and appearance

  2. Hong Kong Sheng Kee Dessert really a great place for people with a sweet tooth. I'll recommended their Mango Pomelo Sago Dessert. It's a typical Hong Kong dessert consists of creamy coconut milk, evaporated milk, sago and bursting citrusy pulps of pomelo. Mango dessert lovers should have a try.
