Tucked away in the familiar neighbourhood of OUG in Kuala Lumpur, IJT Restaurant 二家姐 is that hidden gem. Opened in 2021, this charming, family-run eatery is winning hearts with its dedication to wholesome, traditional Chinese vegetarian cooking—a style that strictly omits garlic, onions, and shallots, yet sacrifices nothing in taste.
Frontage Of IJT Restaurant 二家姐
Step inside, and you're greeted with a simple, welcoming atmosphere that feels like you’ve been invited into a family home for dinner. It's the perfect spot for a comforting meal with loved ones, designed to be shared and savoured.
The Feast: A Symphony of Flavours
The real magic of IJT Restaurant lies in its food. The husband-and-wife team behind the restaurant pour their heart into every recipe, and it shows. Here are the standout dishes from my visit that you absolutely must try.
Signature Asam Fish - If you try only one thing, make it this. The restaurant's signature Asam Fish is a masterclass in balancing flavours. The homemade asam paste is the star—a vibrant, tangy, and perfectly spicy gravy that awakens the senses.
It generously coats their unique, house-made vegetarian fish fillets, which have a surprisingly firm and pleasant texture. This dish is bold, addictive, and a testament to the creativity of vegetarian cooking.
Sweet & Sour Monkey Mushroom: This was my personal favourite and a dish that I’ll be dreaming about for weeks. Chunky, meaty pieces of Monkey Head Mushroom (also known as Lion's Mane) are deep-fried to a perfect crisp and then tossed in a glistening, sweet and sour sauce.
My Personal Favourite Dish!
Studded with fresh, juicy pineapple chunks and crisp bell peppers, every bite is a delightful combination of textures and tastes. The mushroom itself acts like a sponge, soaking up all that incredible sauce. It's simply spectacular.
Salted Fish Claypot
RM 22
For those who love comforting, rice-drenching dishes, the Salted Fish Claypot is a must-order. Served bubbling hot, this dish features a deeply savoury, umami-rich sauce that is pure comfort.
It’s filled with mock salted fish and mock pork belly, which add a fantastic texture and depth of flavour. Spoon this over a bowl of hot steamed rice, and you'll understand why it's a crowd favourite.
Tofu with Minced Mushroom & Preserved Vegetable
RM 18
You can always judge a Chinese eatery by its tofu, and IJT passes with flying colours. Their tofu is homemade, and you can taste the difference immediately. It’s unbelievably smooth, silky, and delicate, practically melting in your mouth.
Topped with a flavourful mixture of minced mushrooms and savoury preserved vegetables (mui choy), this dish is subtle, elegant, and utterly delicious.
Four Heavenly With Petai
RM 17
Four Heavenly with Petai – A fragrant and spicy vegetarian dish stir-fried with four flavourful vegetables: petai (stinky beans), brinjal, long beans, and ladies’ fingers – creating a flavourful and satisfying combination. A deliciously aromatic combo that’s bold in taste and full of texture!
What Else is on the Menu?
The menu is packed with other tempting options that are perfect for rounding out your meal:
Marmite Brinjal
RM 17
Marmite Brinjal - Crispy fried brinjal coated in a glossy Marmite glaze that’s both savoury and slightly sweet. A unique dish with bold umami notes that will leave you wanting more.
Kam Heong Lotus
RM 19
Kam Heong Lotus - A fragrant stir-fry of lotus root slices tossed in the bold flavours of Kam Heong – a savoury mix of curry leaves, dried shrimp (vegetarian version uses meat-free seasoning), chillies, and spices. Crunchy, spicy, and addictive!
Crunchy Char Siew
RM 20
Vegetarian Crunchy Char Siew - Enjoy the sweet and smoky taste of char siew in a vegetarian style. Made with mock meat, glazed with a caramelised sauce, and pan-fried to a delightful crunch.
Vegetarian Curry Lamb
RM 20
Vegetarian Curry Lamb - A hearty plant-based twist on a classic, this dish features tender mock lamb pieces simmered in a rich, aromatic curry sauce infused with herbs and spices. Perfectly comforting and full of flavour.
Salted Pickled Soup
RM 24
