Jeassy and her brother, Jacky, both are proud of their mother’s cooking, set up Hock Kee to showcase his mother’s recipes and style of cooking so that everyone can savour his mother’s wonderful cooking. Their love and passion for good Hock Chew cuisine drive them to open up Hock Kee serving their family time-honoured recipes that spanned over 4 generations. With Hock Kee, now their family's legacy lives on the dishes they served to customers every day! 👪👪👪

A Hock Chew herself, Madam Gong's grand mother hails from Fook Chow. Her daughter, Jeassy learnt to cook the cuisine from her mother and grand mother. "I was driven by the passion for ensuring that true Hock Chew was preserved for generations to come," she said.

Here is a bittersweet story about how a heritage brand is built.

In Fook Chow, China, Jeassy's matriarch great grandmother’s red wine was a village byword for craftsmanship. The recipe came down four generations of women to Miss Jeassy as a parting gift from her great grand mother to her grandmother.

Before leaving Fook Chow, China to Malaya, Jeassy and Jacky's grandmother received a jar of her beloved mother's Fook Chow Red Rice Wine as a goodbye gift.  That last jar of red wine became the inspiration for Jeassy and Jacky’s mee suah shop, Hock Kee. Jeassy' grandmother never saw her mother again, but her Fook Chow legacy lives on in the Heritage Red Wine Mee Suah that Jeassy's mother craft every day.

A tradition Jeassy's grandmother instilled in her own daughter - Jeassy's mother - nurturing a filial piety upon all her descendants to remember their Fook Chow roots and to immortalise the memories of her mother whom she never got to lay eyes on again in her lifetime.

Madam Gong attributes their continued popularity to their stall's home-made dishes. "Some customers who come here have Hock Chew roots and they miss the food. In addition, almost all of our dishes are made from scratch, including the Chinese red wine, sauces and mee suah," she added.

Hock Kee's Signature Red Wine Mee Suah is a living testament to Jeassy and Jacky - its siblings' founders' family tale of their grandmother's most tender and memorable legacy. The traditional Hock Chew dish prepared with Madam Lee's house made red rice wine.

The main ingredients for making the red rice wine (hong zhao, ang zao or 红槽) consists of red rice yeast, wine yeast and glutinous rice and is fermented for a total of 45 days. Madam Gong added that premium ingredients are used that go into the making of a high-quality red rice wine.

This speciality is cooked with fresh red rice wine and chicken in a thick, intense and rich-tasting red broth served with their own house made mee suah. Definitely, leaves an impression and good to the last drop! Highly recommended to try when dining here for the first time.... 😍😍😍

The Hock Chew Dry Mee Suah uses a different kind of mee suah - serving a thicker version of the regular fine one, mixed in dark sauce and topped with chopped scallions, comes with four deliciously plump stuffed Tau pok.

The delightfully stuffed Tau pok made from minced pork and Tenggiri fish paste really made my day. It's firm and flavourful with each bite, you can basically taste the well-marinated meat delicately wrapped within the Tau pok. It's not on the menu for topping up only the stuffed Tau pok but I wished it could as it's really very deliciously addictive once you tried it! 😋😋😋

Home Cooked Braised Pork Rice is another winner on its own which is a harmonious blend of savoury dark soy sauce, spices, garlic bulbs and the juicy pork belly with an equal amount of lean and fats.

This dish is best eaten with a bowl of warm rice and as usual, my son is scrapping off the gravy to go with these last bits of rice grains. You can add-on for an extra bowl of rice for RM2. Thumbs up to this hearty and comforting home-cooked food! 👍👍👍

There's also the  Red Vinasse Pork Rice, which is lean pork slices cooked with the remains of the fermented glutinous rice and red yeast rice for making red rice wine. I was also told that the Hock Chews are frugal and practical people, so 'Waste not, Want not', the fermented red rice wine's residue is used to prepare this home-style pork dish.

I found this dish very subjective, some may enjoy it for the rich and aromatic flavour while on the other hand, some may not like it due to the strong taste. I personally find it not appealing but instead do enjoy the soup version of the red rice wine instead.

No Hock Chew meal is complete without the famous Hock Chew Fish Ball Soup. Although I was told by Madam Gong that they didn't have the time to make this delicacy in their kitchen, I can't help but must order to savour these favourite pork stuffed fish ball - just to satisfy my cravings.

It was indeed a good choice to try them - she got a good supplier and these stuffed fish balls were really good - having the bouncy texture of fish balls with well-seasoned meat within, served in a pork bone and chicken broth.

For dessert, we had Hock Chew Peanut Soup ~ A sweet peanut soup boiled with sweet dried longan, red dates and rock sugar. Truly an exclusive dessert served only by the Hock Chew!

Hock Chew peanut soup, a traditional dessert served on the 3rd day of Chinese Lunar New Year has an interesting filial story to it. Madam Gong explained that daughters that were married off will lovingly prepare this peanut soup when they returned home to visit them, as an act of expressing filial piety and gratitude to their parents.

Overall, Hock Kee wins my heart with their home-cooked dishes - ensuring quality and freshness in their dishes, without compromise. The traditional nutrient-rich Hock Chew red rice wine is a concoction of simple ingredients but the people or rather the Hock Chews mastered the art of making a good fine rice wine, serving each and every dish to evoke reminiscence of their roots and memorable legacy. How authentic!
