HEUN KEE, the famous Claypot Chicken Rice Shop located at Pudu Wet Market in town needs no introduction. This much-talked-about food destination for one of the best-tasting clay pot chicken rice in Klang Valley is very popular among the foodies in town!

It's been a while since I last ate at Huen Kee. I used to stay at Jalan Kampung Pandan and frequent the eateries around Pudu a lot. On that night, I was on the hunt for the unique 'Duck Egg Wanton Noodles' stall inside the Pudu Wet Market as recommended by my foodie friend, Logan Goh, but luck wasn't with me because the stall was not opened that night. So we remembered an old haunt we used to eat many years ago and decided to check out Huen Kee for a change.

Well, I will definitely be back to check out this special wanton noodles stall on one of these days when I'm in town!

This little hidden gem is tucked away under a bridge just next to Pudu or Jalan Pasar Wet Market. If you're on Jalan Yew, look out for the corner shop painted in green which is just opposite another corner coffee shop (Tai Chow Stall) with the signboard 'Pusat Akupunktur Koh Nang Choong'. Huen Kee is just located next to this 'Tai Chow stall'

Anyway, it's easy to find this clay pot chicken shop - just follow the smell or aromatic fragrant smoky charcoal aroma that will definitely bring you to the shop!

The humble eatery has been around for many decades and it gets crowded most of the time. Diners are required to place their orders before entering the shop and have to wait outside before being allocated a table in the shop itself. We were attended by the owner's son where we placed our orders right away and have to follow the order of  "Wait Before Seated".

There's even a large signboard to advise diners to call 30 minutes in advance and make your orders or booking to reduce the waiting time.

Diners here will be able to see rows and rows of clay pots all lined up, bubbling and boiling over the charcoal stoves. It's uniquely prepared using a very special method whereby they put charcoal fire not only underneath the pots but on top of it to make sure the pot is heated evenly, thus speeding up the cooking process.

Each clay pot chicken rice is cooked to perfection using charcoal fire to ensure that the quality is consistent.

multi-tasking and expertly manning the hot pots
A cook is always close by, multi-tasking and expertly manning the hot pots, scooping rice grains and flavoured broth into the clay pot and allowing it to cook to perfection. You'll be surprised to see foreigners cooking the dish but I guess they have been well-trained and mastered the art of cooking a perfect claypot rice!

Diners can request for their favourite parts of the chicken - like me, I have a request for only chicken breast meat for my pot of claypot chicken rice. They served a 'mix-cut' if there's no special request but a special cut of drumstick, thigh and wings are charged at an extra  RM 8 for small, RM 7 for medium and RM 11 for the large pot.

Some say, the secret to a tasty clay pot chicken rice dish lies in the slightly burnt rice, which lines the inside of the pot, as it gives the dish extra flavour and smokiness. What's makes it nice, I guess it that they used pork bone and chicken broth to cook the rice, so it's very flavoursome.

The dish arrived at my table with a lingering aromatic smoky charcoal smell - so 'harum' - so classic - so original, looking very delicious. Just can't wait to dig in one of my favourite dishes!

Watch this video showing one of the best-tasting Claypot chicken rice in town at Pudu. If only you can smell fragrant in the smoky rice dish, it was served to us piping hot with an aromatic charcoal burnt smell!

My hubby and I really loved the taste of the dish, scraping the bottom layer of the burnt rice. The dish does include a generous portion of chicken inside, along with waxed Chinese sausages and salted fish which give this clay pot chicken rice its scrumptious flavours.

I guess my picture above paints a thousand word - no explanation needed as to how good the claypot rice was! We were seen scraping the pots to the last grain of burnt rice - hahaha !

RM 26.10 With GST

RM 11 maybe a little steep for any regular small pot of single-serving clay pot chicken rice but I bet to defer for this case. Their serving portion of rice is generous together with around 6 to 8 pieces of chicken meat per serving is a good offer!

Updated Price - RM 12.50 per single pot serving now, I last ate on June 15, 2018!
