Fish Ball Noodles
RM 6 (Small)
Many years ago, I used to reside at Desa Pandan in town which is quite near to Pudu and Jalan Pasar area. The old part of Kuala Lumpur bears many tasty memories for me during my 14 years of stay in Klang Valley.
So when a foodie friend of mine asked me for recommendations of some good old simple food in Pudu, I would not hesitate to refer them to one of the favourites stalls - Phoon Kee Fish Ball Noodles stall located at Jalan Seladang, off Jalan Pasar in Pudu, Kuala Lumpur. It's easy to spot this stall as it's right beside RHB Bank facing the main road.
This decades-old hawker stall sells homemade fish balls and fish cakes together with noodles soup. The soup based comes from the fish bones and anchovies that have been boiled for long hours to extract the goodness and true flavour of a natural-tasting soup.
You will enjoy the bouncy and chewy texture of the homemade fish ball together with the deep-fried charred side of the fish cakes. Both are absolutely delicious on their own and served in soup or you can order your fishball noodles with your choice of yellow mee, vermicelli and kuey teow.
I like mine served with vermicelli as this type of noodles tasted best in the soupy dish as the rice noodles readily absorbed the flavours, thus making them ever tasty than before!
A bowl of fishball noodles comes with clear but flavourful fish stock soup served with 5 pieces of fishball and several slices of fish cakes. Fried shallots and chopped scallions are added to enhance the overall flavour of the dish.
Phoon Kee is run by two sisters for as long as I know for more than 25 years. I believe this business was handed down from their parents to them. They have garnered regulars over the years and their homemade fish ball and fish cakes are a hit with locals.
Although they do offer some curry laksa I always fall back to ordering my all-time favourite fishball noodles in the soup when patronising their stall whenever I'm around the area.
It had fried shallots, spring onions, bean sprouts (taugeh), fish balls and thin slices of fish cakes to be enjoyed with flat rice noodles, yellow mee or vermicelli. If you're a fish balls lovers, remember to order the homemade fish balls in soup and savour every single bite of the bouncy fish ball.
