MALLIKAS RESTAURANT
SERVING UP THE BEST OF INDIA
November is a month to celebrate the Festival of Lights, Deepavali. Taking this opportunity to look out in search of an authentic Indian restaurant to get my craving satisfied on this time of the month, my 'Jalan-Jalan Cari Makan' gastronomic journey has brought me a newbie in town.
Serving Up The Best Of India Cuisine
Tucked away in Aked Esplanad, Bukit Jalil is a hidden gastronomic gem called Mallikas Restaurant. Unassuming and quiet, the restaurant been operating a year ago serves authentic fare of Northern and Southern Indian delights to appease the taste buds of Indian food lovers. I heard that they are popular among the office crowd and residents staying around the vicinity at Bukit Jalil.
Determined to serve the best cuisine from both worlds - North and South Indian dishes, Mallikas Restaurant has a chef each from Tamilnadu, South India and Uttar Pradesh, North India itself. Owned by Madam Grace Mallika Judson or Mallika as she is affectionately known, Mallikas Restaurant has an impressive menu to choose from and the dishes do not fail to impress.
With a well-defined menu which is divided according to food groups and different types of meats, there's a useful guide indicating vegetarian and non-vegetarian food groups, handy when considering the diet and religion of diners who frequent the place.
Amazing Mural Decorated The Wall
Madam Mallika said that food was her passion and it was her lifelong dream to own a restaurant. She said that Mallikas Restaurant was a realisation of a 20-year-old dream. It was opened more than a year ago with the help of her son in law, Robert Doraisamy. To feature authentic dishes, she brought experienced chefs from India, specialising in curries, tandoor dishes, biryanis and bread, to recreate Indian flavours in Malaysia.
STARTERS
Crunchy Onion Pakoda
RM 10
We started the meal with starters of crunchy Onion Pakoda, followed by Chicken Vepudu, chicken made with tender cubes of chicken breast meat marinated with fresh ground masala spices.
Chicken Vepudu
RM 16
Chicken Vepudu, a deep-fried wonder was a big hit with everyone at the dinner table. Juicy and well-marinated with masala spices, together with the wafting smell of spices and curry leaves whet our appetites, every bite was simply addictive. You just can't stop at one, neither do I.
Tawa Fish
RM 17
Shorba (Chicken)
RM 8
If you like a tummy-soothing soup before the mains, then you should try Shorba - an authentic North Indian Soup prepared with chicken or seafood and fresh exotic spices to tickle your taste buds.
MAINS
Highlights Of The Meal
NON-VEGETARIAN SIDE DISHES
Star Of The Night
Butter Chicken Masala
Butter Chicken Masala
RM 18
A definite must-try would have to be their Butter Chicken Masala. I simply cannot get enough of this chicken. Positive highlights on the dish here lie where the Tandoor-cooked chicken is stir-fried in a rich and creamy tomato masala along with some spices. The gravy was positively thick and flavourful, simply addictive with rice or naan bread.
Chicken Andhra Roast
RM 18
Another classic South Indian dish originated from Andhra Pradesh is the Chicken Andhra Roast. Mouth-watering, juicy and succulent ghee roasted chicken thigh, it's a popular chicken dish in Andhra. The dish makes its appearance in an exciting presentation on a sizzling smoking hot plate for dramatic effects.
Though not as spicy as the earlier one, this one still packs loads of punchy spicy notes. Crispy well-roasted chicken is perfumed with lots of dried spices to give it its aromatic distinctive flavour. Love this and I can never get enough of this! Highly recommended if you love roast....
Mutton Pepper Fry
RM 19
My hubby, a fan of lamb was totally in love with this rich South Indian cuisine. This toothsome serving of Mutton Pepper Fry takes up a lengthy cooking process with spices, onions, ginger garlic paste and pepper powder where the mutton is cooked until dry, tender and flavourful. He was last seen scraping off the bits and pieces of the fragrant spices and onions off the plate.
Prawn Varuval
RM 18
Prawns lover, can order the Prawn Varuval, which is stir-fried masala coated prawns.
Chicken Biryani
RM 16.50
Chicken Biryani is long grain Basmati-flavoured rice cooked with spices, herbs and chicken in a dum. Indulge your taste buds in North Indian flavours with generous helpings of the grainy rice bursting with aromatic herbs and spices, it comes with your meat of choice – perfect for carnivorous big eaters. You can choose from lamb, chicken to fish or prawn to your personal liking.
VEGETARIAN MAINS
Palak Paneer
RM 16
Bhindi Aloo Do Pyaza
RM 14
Another vegan dish - Bhindi Aloo Do Pyaza is a stir-fried okra and onion curry, a delectable veggie marriage made in heaven. If you love onions, this dish is specially made for you. Prepared with generous use of spices, loads of sliced onion and tomatoes are cooked together, making it one of the best curries in town.
Vegetable Pulav
RM 12
More vegetarian rice to your delights - Vegetable Pulav - a simple and tasty rice dish prepared with a variety of vegetables and spices.
Tomato Rice
RM 8
Another vegetarian rice dish you can order is the Tomato Rice - Fresh tomatoes, pureed and sauteed with aromatic spices and cooked to an incredibly aromatic rice dish. It was incredibly fragrant and probably made with generous amounts of fresh tomato puree. Fluffy, warm, and grainy, it was the perfect base for their curries.
BREADS
Butter Naan
RM 5
Butter Naan - a soft flaky tandoor baked bread layered with butter.
Kashmiri Naan
RM 8
Oven baked flatbread flavoured with a mixture of healthy nuts and raisins to enhance its flavour.
BREAKFAST
Masala Dosai
RM 9.50
A must-try Masala Dosai, super crispy long dosai - a variant of the popular dosai that comes with tasty potato and curry leaf filling. Served with a variety of chutneys and curries.
DRINKS
Choice Drinks For The Night
Hot Lemon Tea RM 4, Apple Lassi RM 8 & Mango Lassi RM 8
Introducing specially concocted drinks by Mallikas themselves. I loved both my pre-meal of Hot Lemon Tea and for my post-meal drink is the soothing Badam Milk.
Masala Tea RM 4.50 & Hot Lemon Tea RM 4
Hot Lemon Tea
RM 4
Their Hot Lemon Tea gets the thumbs-up from me. A perfect combination of strong tea and lemon juice and turns out, well-balanced between the two flavours, certainly makes a satisfying drink to quench thirst and soothe the throat.
Badam Milk
RM 5
For something different, opt for Badam Milk. A creamy drink that emits a sweet aroma, soothing and comforting to the tummy.
It's my first time drinking this hot milk with almonds, and I actually developed a liking towards this drink. Many thanks to my dining foodie cum blogger friend - Ah Bok who recommended me to try this tasty saffron infused drink!
Gulab Jamun
RM 4
We wrapped up the meal with Gulab Jamun. Unlike gelato or ice creams, this sweet dessert has a rougher texture that lingers on the tongue. The sweetness of the Gulab Jamun stood out for me and might be an acquired taste only for those who enjoy very sweet dessert.
Overall, the food they serve is really good quality. Fresh ingredients are used in all their cooking, from making their own spices powder to their own curries paste, all made from scratch. Prices may be a bit steep but please don't compare them with your regular Mamaks.
All dishes are prepared by experienced chefs from India, one is spoilt for choice with items catering to both vegetarians and non-vegetarians. Do come by to try the dishes for yourself and I believe Mallikas will fire up your taste buds in no time!
