MOON PALACE (Cheras) Restaurant ~ Dim Sum With A Twist At Cheras Sentral Jalan Cheras Kuala Lumpur

MOON PALACE (CHERAS) RESTAURANT
Serving Up Dim Sum
With A Twist
Taking a break from my Ramadan Buffet food reviews session recently, I was totally delighted when invited to a Dim Sum tasting session at Moon Palace (Cheras) Restaurant which opened for business in June 2014 in Cheras Sentral Shopping Mall approximately two years ago.

A relatively new restaurant, Moon Palace Cheras is fast becoming a popular favourite spot among the local Cheras folks for family dining serving an array of a tantalising dim sum, a la carte dishes for lunch and dinner too.

Spacious & Comfortable Setting

Moon Palace offers a wide selection of traditional Chinese cuisine with an emphasis on the freshest ingredients prepared from the scratch. Apart from that, with a spacious seating capacity accommodate up to 1000 guests with 100 banquet tables, it's an excellent choice for private events in the neighbourhood such as wedding receptions, full moon parties, birthday party, corporate lunch, company dinners and all other functions.

Moon Palace also boast of having 3 VIP private dining room that seats 10 to 30 diners comfortably without any additional room charge or minimum spending. But prior bookings need to be made to avoid disappointment.

Dim sum served at Moon Palace been given a new twist, a mixed between traditional and contemporary. When you have someone like Chef Loong, who has been honing his dim sum-making skills since the age of 15 for more than 3 decades, you can expect interesting and innovative things on his menu.

Pretty Treats Of Dim Sum

Chef Loong is at the helm of the new Moon Palace Restaurant in Cheras Sentral, which prides itself on serving honest Malaysian Chinese cuisine with a twist. Speaking of twist, Chef Loong elevates traditional dim sum and tweaks them to include contemporary flavours. Fret not, the flavours are by no means strange or conflicting.

Well, let's move on and let me introduce the delectable dim sum treats which I had recently in their respective category as follows:

SEASONAL SPECIALS
 Top Pick Of The Day
Steamed Superior Fish Maw & Dried Seafood Rolled With Bamboo Pith
RM 13.57

While I'm not a fan of dim sum with fish maw, Chef Loong is spot on when it comes to combining flavours. His clever use of the right ingredients such the premium fish maw,  fish paste, sea cucumber and bamboo pith resulted into a flavourful, wholesome dim sum with the perfect taste and texture.

I was utterly happy with just having a bowl or two of this all for myself that day. Highly recommended dim sum to try at Moon Palace!

Steamed Spinach Rice Roll Filled With Shrimp
RM 7.20

The Steamed Spinach Rice Roll Filled With Shrimp was given a makeover treatment of having spinach chee cheong fun or rice rolls instead of the usual. With light green skin of rice roll wrapped around the plump fresh prawn, this delicate find will make quite an impression especially to those looking for a new flavour to their usual rice rolls.

Steamed Charcoal Salted Egg Lava Bun
RM 6.89 (2 pcs)

With the latest craze all about salted egg yolk custard bun, or more commonly and affectionately known as "Liu Sha Bao", Moon Palace introduces its very own version of Steamed Charcoal Salted Egg Lava Bun.

Just like the molten lava cake with chocolate oozing out, the "Liu Sha Bao" at Moon Palace is an explosion of sweet custard and savoury salted egg yolk. Everyone loved this piping hot charcoal bun with a flowy centre, it's such a crowd-pleaser whenever it's served.

 Golden Crispy Apple Salad Prawn
RM 9.33 (3 pcs)

SUNDAY & HOLIDAY SPECIALS
 Crispy BBQ Pork Buns
RM 7.21 (3 pcs)

Similar to popular Tim Ho Wan's signature, Baked Bun with BBQ Pork, Moon Palace's version of their very own, Crispy BBQ Pork Buns does not fail in term of taste and texture. It's crispy and slightly sweet bun comes with a generous filling of sticky, sweet and salty lean pork, making it a favourite.

 STEAMED DIM SUM
As Good As It Looks
Steamed "Golden Fish" Prawn Dumplings
RM 7.42

Dim sum lovers, take note... this is not your usual spread of tasty har gao or prawn dumplings. Feast your eyes on these almost too cute to be eaten Steamed "Golden Fish" Prawn Dumplings.

If the dim sum served that day were vying for "the prettiest dim sum" title, the prize would have gone to the Steamed "Golden Fish" Prawn Dumplings. This tasty morsel is both a winner for great flavour and presentation, too.

Steamed Pork Dumplings With Fish Roe
RM 6.89

Here's another nice dim sum worth mentioning. Loved these plump looking Steamed Pork Dumplings With Fish Roe, a juicy kick of minced pork and prawns topped with fish roe wrapped in wonton skins. Simple but tasty dim sum is served topped with bouncy prawn and fish roe.

Signature Steamed Sesame Lotus Buns
RM 6.89

A dim sum meal would not be complete without a bun, and during the review, we tried the Signature Steamed Sesame Lotus Buns. The lotus filling was pleasantly not too sweet; the sesame bun was soft, which made it perfect to have at the end of the meal.

Steamed Chicken Feet With Eggplant & Black Pepper
RM 6.15

If you're a fan of chicken feet, do give this dim sum a try. It didn't appeal to me as I found it too strong in taste and flavouring, more salty than usual. Probably it was rather salty for my taste to eat it on its own without any rice.

BAKED & FRIED DIM SUM
Stir-Fried Radish Cake With Homemade XO Sauce
RM 8.48

If you're looking for something more filling, you ought to try out this special Stir-Fried Radish Cake With Homemade XO Sauce. Full of Wok-Hei, chunky cubes of radish cake are stir-fried with preserved vegetable, egg, bean sprout and enhanced with special XO sauce. Make sure to eat it while it's still warm, otherwise, its flavour becomes less pronounced. It was one of  the crowd favourites on that day too!

Deep Fried Avocado With Custard
RM 7.95

If you like the crispy and crunchy type of dim sum, then I think the Deep Fried Avocado With Custard might appeal to you. It's very delicate and light. The crunchiness will first greet you as you bite into it and then you'll be able to taste the avocados, soft and tender.

Vietnamese Pan Fried Shrimp Roll With Mango
RM 7.95

Yam Buns
RM 6.89 (3 pcs)

 Deep Fried Sweet Potato Roll
RM 6.89

BBQ, RICE & NOODLES
 Roasted Pork
RM 26.50 (S) RM 42.40 (M) RM 63.60 (L)

 BBQ Pork
RM 26.50 (S) RM 42.40 (M) RM 63.60 (L)

DESSERT
 Homemade Cotton Cake
RM 6.15

Dessert fans can embrace the Homemade Cotton Cake. Something so simple and yet simply wonderful. This light-as-air cotton cake is an enjoyable dessert to savour for its fluffiness, soft and mildly sweet with dry shredded coconuts added to enhance its flavour!

Homemade Cotton Cake is another gem here. It was the crowd favourite at the review session as every single piece was finished in no time! Well, this one of my 'must-eat-again' food when I do come back to this place.

 Crystal Sweet Potato Ball
RM 6.15

If sweet potatoes are what you like, remember to try the Crystal Sweet Potato Ball. Well-prepared delicate translucent skin wrapped the soft and sweet melt-in-mouth purple sweet mashed potatoes. I can taste the natural sweetness coming from the sweet potatoes used in this dim sum.

All-in-all, Chef Loong makes no compromise with dim sum menu served at Moon Palace. As the saying goes, first impression count and Chef Loong thinks out of the box as he whips up an amazing menu that dazzles the senses. Focus on quality and clever use of ingredients in creating its flawless array of dim sum cuisines to feast your eyes and then to please your senses.

Variety is one of dim sum's most pleasing qualities and you will be spoilt for choice with more than 60 types of dim sum served at Moon Palace.
