Thumbs Up Posing With The King of Durian Himself, Owner ~ Erik Ong

Making your dreams come true, the famous Durian King in Taman Tun Dr Ismail (TTDI) opened its second branch in the heart of Klang Valley, Bukit Bintang, resulting in its successful opening in Taman Tun Dr Ismail (TTDI) last year.

Durian King Bukit Bintang is located behind the Shaw Parade and within walking distance to Berjaya Times Square, in an open car park lot along Jalan 1/77B Imbi. You can never miss this roadside outlet.

Quality Assured Black Thorns & Musang King

I was pretty excited to get to taste the famed champion of durian, "Durian of the Year 2012," called "Black Thorn" or "Ochee," at this event. Originating from Penang, Erik told me that the most sought-after Black Thorn Durian is only available in mid-year, and now is the best time of the year to taste them. Prices vary daily, so be prepared to pay over RM 40 to RM 50 per kg for this prized durian!

Happy Me With Erik & His Worker

The owner of Durian King, Erik, took the liberty of sharing a thought or two with us on how to identify the two famous durians, the Black Thorn and the Musang King.

The Black Thorn
The Black Thorn has a distinctive orange-coloured flesh, almost a bright hue of orange with fine wrinkles. Erik explained that the Black Thorn will taste better and turn more orange in hue when kept a day after picking from the farm.

The Black Thorn is also a durian that varies greatly in flavour depending on the tree's age. A good and tasty Ocee or Black Thorn comes from a mature tree; a young tree won't bear a nice-tasting durian.

The taste of Black Thorn is rich, starting out sweet with a bitter end note. It is intense and super creamy. The flesh is softer, smoother, and aromatic.

Identify The Black Thorn

Black Thorn
Star Fruit Shape Durian

The Black Thorn has a distinct feature, with a shape resembling the Star fruit, which is roundish in shape, as depicted in the picture above.

Orange Flesh Black Thorn

Another distinct feature to spot the difference between Black Thorn and other species is checking out the fruit's bottom or end. It has a flat bottom with an interesting tiny blackthorn jutting out in the middle, and it will turn black when it is ripe. Finding one with the blackthorn still intact is difficult, as many have dropped off during packing and transportation from the farm.

The Musang King
Musang King, aka Mao San Wang Durian, is also one of the most sought-after and highly-priced varieties of durian besides the Black Thorn. Selling for more than twice the price of an average durian, Musang King is like black market gold to many durian lovers.

The most well-known characteristic of Musang King is its deep, turmeric-colored, yellow flesh, which has a heavenly fragrant smell and creamy taste.

Visibility of Seams With Five-Pointed Star

Another two distinct features are the crown and the bottom of the Musang King. As you can see in the picture, the Musang King has a smooth crown with a ring marking around the stem. The spikes face downwards away from it, with a gap between the crown and where the spikes start.

Apart from that, Musang King's bottom has a visible broad five-pointed star. The seams and visible lines are quite noticeable, running the length from the tip to the stem.

Raja Kunyit or Mao San Wang Durian

Musang King is also known as Raja Kunyit in Malay for its golden yellowish smooth flesh. Along with the characteristic of golden yellow flesh, tastewise Musang King is said to be more sweet than bitter, rich with thick flesh and small seed.

The best Musang King was widely known to have originated from Pahang, and the Durian King had them contracted from a farm in Raub, Pahang, for supply.

Durian King's supply of durian is transported daily fresh from the contracted farm in Raub, Pahang, and Penang.

Erik explained that durian lovers in Klang Valley can only purchase Black Thorn from their TTDI or Bukit Bintang stall and not any other durian store, as they have solely contracted the farms to supply this Black Thorn to Durian King itself.

Durian King is also the First in Malaysia to serve absolutely tasty chilled durian straight from the freezer at the stall. Erik got the idea when some of his customers bought the durian home to be kept in the fridge rather than eating at the stall because many like to consume it chilled instead.

Well, keeping that in mind and to ensure customer satisfaction, he invested in a special chiller to keep some durians chilled, ready for its discerning customers to taste at any time of the day. I would like to have my durians chilled, too, before I consume them, hahaha.

On How To Choose The Perfect Durian

Erik took some time to share a tip or two on choosing a nice and tasty durian.

1st Test: Pick up a durian; put it near your nose; take a deep sniff or breathe in to smell it; if you can smell the durian aroma, you pass the 1st test.

2nd  Test: Give the durian a good shake; if you can feel knocking, the fruit is good.

So what are you waiting for? The awesome, crazy durian season is here; come and savour it with your loved ones and durian-loving friends at Durian King.
