Grand Shanghai Banquet differs from the neighbourhood restaurants around Sri Petaling, being one of the artistically decorated classy and premium Chinese eateries with its posh-looking exterior and stylish luxurious gold-themed interior.

Drawing inspiration from the glamorous Shanghai city in the 1920's era, diners enjoys the grand décor of Oriental settings with beautiful yellow lanterns and shimmering wall papers. With nostalgic and unforgettable Chinese songs of yesteryears playing at the background, Grand Shanghai Banquet sets the mood for a exquisite dining experience in the old charms and ambiance of old China in city of Shanghai.

 Dinosaur Roll
RM 7

My Top Pick for the Day is the Dinosaur Rolls. The normal chee cheong fan (rice roll) is given a twist as it is wrapped  around  the deep fried Vietnamese rice paper filled with well-flavoured radish shreds.

You will surely enjoy eating the paper-thin and crispy rice paper as it's fried to perfection, paired up wonderfully with the rice roll. The delightful unique dim sum has layers of texture unfolding with each mouthful.

Steamed Pastry with Grand Shanghai Style in Superior Soup
RM 9.00

Steamed Pastry with Grand Shanghai Style in Superior Soup  or better known as Shanghai Xiao Long Bao is some of the example of dim sum from the north. Its meets the requirement of having spoonful of soup and juicy minced meat wrapped in thin skin.

This vinegar sauce with ginger shreds lends  an appetising tangy coat to the firm-texture dumplings. Some may like it and some don't, so its entirely up to your personal preference.

Siew Mai
Pork & Shrimp Dumplings
RM 7.50

Steamed Fish Maw Mai with Spicy Sauce
RM 7.50

Here's another nice dim sum worth mentioning. Simple but tasty dim sum of fish paste is served topped with chewy fish maw. Bouncy texture of the springy and flavourful fresh fish paste lies beneath fish maw will have you wanting more!

"Sui Kow" Dumplings In Superior Soup
RM 9.80

Good bet with this staple dim sum. The chef is generous with the fillings of pork and prawns, so every bite comes with chunky meaty wrapped with thin Sui Kow's skin.

 Grand Shanghai Shrimp Dumpling
RM 8

A must-try to check how good the dim sum chef are is to just try their skill in making these traditional staple 'Har Gao', typical shrimp dumpling. Prawns used were fresh-tasting wrapped delicately translucent skin. These familiar face like the Har Gao is chock-full of sweet, fresh prawns, each bite bouncy and firm.

Spinach Rice Flour Roll With Fresh Prawn
RM 7

Next comes the spread of Fried and Baked Dim Sum, which are still popular as some diners might wants to try some fried or baked items besides the steamed ones. You will be spoilt for choice with a total of 16 items to choose from. The recommended ones by the manager were the first three dim sum mentioned as follows:

 Baked BBQ Pork Puff
RM 12.80

These cute looking pastry puff looks appetising are made into bite-sizes portions. The pastry was flaky and soft but I found the BBQ pork to be on the sweeter side.

Grand Shanghai Special Baked Bun with BBQ Pork
RM 12.80

One of the more popular signature dishes is the Grand Shanghai Special Baked Bun with BBQ Pork, resembling famous Tim Ho Wan's baked bun. A crisp and slightly sweet bun comes with filling of sticky, sweet and salty lean pork, making it a favourite. Not the best if you benchmarked against the latter but they some how got the texture rightfully crisp but it's a tad too sweet for me.

Fried Custard Quicksand Bun "Shanghai Style"
RM 8.50

A triple shots of how creamy the custard "quicksand" filling can be. Eat it fast while it's warm to taste the sweet and fragrant salted egg yolk within the crispy fried buns.

 Fresh Baked Egg Tart
RM 7

These fragrant egg tarts selection are of bite-sized delicacies, made fresh every morning. The egg filling was good but I found the pastry not up to mark as it's not as flaky as expected lacking in the melt-in-mouth sensation and the base is thick too.

Stir Fried Radish Cake With Bean Sprout
RM 7.50

Meanwhile, the  Stir Fried Radish Cake With Bean Sprout is a satisfying savoury dish to try. Served with radish cake fried with lots of chives, bean sprouts, eggs and chunky pieces of the radish cake.

Recommended Dish
Shanghai Style Pork Knuckle
RM 9.80

A winner among the savoury dim sum, the Shanghai Style Pork Knuckle made it to the good books for my hubby, Uncle Hong. Being a pork knuckle lover, he just got to try out the dish. Slightly spicy with tender and juicy pieces of the chunky pork knuckle, the chef did good in this special Shanghai dish.

 Cheong Fen Steamed Pork Ribs
RM 8.50

 Steamed Chicken Feet
RM 6.50

Loh Mai Kai
Glutinous Rice
RM 6.50

Claypot Porridge With Shang Har Prawn
RM 26.80

Voted the Best Dish by everyone at the dining table, Claypot Porridge With Shang Har Prawn is comforting pot of great-tasting porridge filled with natural sweetness coming from the fresh big prawns , hit all the right spots with the perfect smooth yet rich texture.

The freshness of the prawns is top-notch and the porridge is splendidly smooth, pretty tasty in its own right. Definitely a must-try for the seafood porridge lover. We end up ordering two of pot of this dish and everyone are slurping their way into delicious goodness of this tasty porridge!

After indulging in that nonetheless appetising dish, the sweet soup desserts are a welcome sight to to end our satisfying Sunday family brunch. We check out the most interesting desserts from their 7 items dessert menu, with each picking their personal favourite to try and share.

 Signature Dessert
Aloe Vera & Grass Jelly Soup
RM 7

A very unique and interesting cold desserts to try. A refreshing and cooling properties of aloe vera, grass jelly (cincau) with sourish-tasting yoghurt pearls within. Savouring these small yoghurt pearls reminds me of the ebiko (salmon eggs), bursting in with every spoonful of this delectable signature dessert which you can't find anywhere else.

Guilinggao
 Herbal Jelly
RM 7

 Longan & Sea Coconut Soup
RM 6

 Sweet Peanut Soup
RM 6

My family's favourite dessert but Grand Shanghai didn't quite get the notes right here in their serving. What's lacking is the smoky and rich flavour present in most well rich-tasting peanut soup. I like mine with slighty burned flavour, creamy and rich with peanuts, where I usually get my favourite fix from the dessert hawker at New Happy Garden Pasar Malam (night market) every Saturday night.

Check out their on-going promotion for a complimentary bowl of  sweet peanut soup. Drop a "LIKE" on their FB page, Snap or Capture 3 pictures or more to post it on your FB, do a check in and lastly, share the post with Grand Shanghai Banquet Facebook for a free bowl of dessert!

Most of the dim sum are good-tasting and well cooked with some hits-and-misses on some of the dishes. Well, I believe given more time their chefs should be able to tweak the recipes and comes up with more tasty offerings for their hungry patrons in future.
