Sous Chef Zairul Effendi Posing with Auntie Lilly

Diners can sample these traditional Malay dishes at Soi23 ~ Soi Twenty Three Restaurant during Ramadhan, thanks to the vast culinary knowledge of its Sous Chef Zairul Effendi. Inspired by memories of his mother’s home-cooked meals, Chef Zairul is cooking up a storm featuring the best of traditional dishes, customarily served during the fasting month.

A few signature dishes I usually look out for are the Daging Masak Hitam, Udang Sambal Petai and Ikan Tenggiri Gulai Kampung.

Daging Masak Hitam

My favourite for the night, tantalising dish of Daging Masak Hitam was cooked till tender infused with traditional home-made spices. Loved the aromatic fragrance with its savoury rich and heavy black sauce, best eaten with neutral taste of the Ghee Rice or Nasi Ghee.

Udang Sambal Petai

 Ikan Tenggiri Gulai Kampung

The Penang dish, Ikan Tenggiri Gulai Kampung, uses succulent mackerel fish or also known as Ikan Tenggiri. The hint of sourness from the tamarind pleases the palate.

Ayam Masak Gulai

Favourites such as satay, ais kacang, ayam percik and roast lamb will be making its usual appearance.
Delicious Looking: Ayam Percik

Grilled Coconut Spiced Chicken or more commonly known as Ayam Percik or Ayam Golek is a tasty dish originated from the Northen States of Kelantan, Malaysia. Grilled till perfection, this marinated chicken is basted with a spiced coconut milk gravy. One of the many favourites served during the holy fasting month of Ramadhan.

Must Have: Roast Lamb Leg

Some of the other local favourites that will be featured at the Ramadhan stalls are nasi dagang, ikan bakar, popiah basah and rojak buah.
 Ikan Bakar

Oh-so-Malaysian: Rojak Pasembur or Rojak Mamak

Nasi Ghee

Tasty East Coast Favourites: Nasi Dagang

Malay cuisines served with piping hot steamed rice are best accompanied with a variety of ‘ulams’ and an array of spicy sambals that would make the perfect meal.

Crunchy Starter: Keropok & Papadom

A meal is never completed without dessert, so check out the Malay kuih and Western sweets available. The favourites include cheesecake, chocolate cake, onde onde, dodol and ice kacang among others.

Remember to leave room for the refreshing ice kacang or delectable sweet treats at the dessert corner.
