Restoran New Peng Wah ~ Chinese Cuisine @SS22 Damansara Jaya Petaling Jaya

Restoran New Peng Wah
Serving Up Chinese Delights

I chance upon Restoran New Peng Wah, a typical old-style Chinese restaurant located at SS22 Damansara Jaya in Petaling Jaya with invites from my foodies friends to join their "Makan Gang" to venture out of Kuala Lumpur in search of tasty home-style food again.

The name of the restaurant sounds familiar, I guess they have many outlets or branches all around Klang Valley as they have been around since the 1970's. They have 2 others outlets with one in Taman Desa in Kuala Lumpur while another located at Kota Kemuning in Shah Alam.

Comfortable ,Clean & Bright

I like the set-up of the restaurant, it is modern and clean. They do away with the wooden or plastic chairs and refurnish it recently as everything from the walls to the tables and chairs look quite new.

Live Fishes At The Aquarium

Signature Lala Soup
RM 48 (XL)

The dishes we ordered for dinner that day is solely based on recommendations from restaurant manager, Paul Tan. Since they are famous for their seafood items, we opt for the fish and lala dishes.

Signature Lala Soup
RM 16 (S)

New Peng Wah is known for their  Signature Lala Soup. The soup, which is clear and light, is filled with fresh and succulent mussels, especially fragrant with the herbs within including wolf berries (Kei Chee). Pre-boiled chicken stock with Chinese herbs of Kei Chee, Dong Quai and ginger is used as the base soup for this delicious soup. You will notice that the mussels are very fresh and large as they used only imported lala from the Philippines. Everyone loving this soup dish, even my son who is no a fan of seafood, is seen busy slurping up the soup happily.

Signature Deep Fried Ma Yau (Senangin)
RM6 for 100gm

Crispy & Fragrant

One of my personal favourites is the Signature Deep Fried Ma Yau (Senangin), also known as the Tread fin fish in English. Basically, it's a home-style dish, I still remember my late mum who loves to cook 'Ma Yau' for the family. Hers was slightly different and more complicated as sometimes she will remove the fish meat and chopped it with prawn and minced pork, stuffed it into the fish and deep fried before serving with savoury sauce to complement the dish.

The fish is fresh and meaty, deep-fried to super crisp condition where you can eat the bones including the crunchy fish head too. Served top with ginger shreds and coriander leaves (Yim Sai) as garnishing. We dig in the appetising fish immediately and it does not disappoint.

Star Dish For The Day
Claypot Hua Tiew Wine Chicken
RM 30 (L)

Claypot Hua Tiew Wine Chicken is an extremely flavoursome and fragrant chicken dish. The chicken is tender and fully coated with the thick brown which goes well with rice. Chef did good with cooking it with lots of finely cut ginger shreds, garlic and premium wine of Hua Tiew as the main seasoning.

It's very satisfying and delicious home-style cooking they have here. I will definitely come back for more of this comforting home-cooked meal. A Must try dish ~ highly recommended for all!

Signature Slice Pork with Nyonya Sauce
RM 28 (L)

Next, we have Slice Pork with Nyonya Sauce, which reminded me of the Steamed Fish which I used to eat in Pudu. Paul Tan explain that they make their own sauce and paste from scratch using fresh herbs and spices including this special Nyonya sauce.

Sourish, spicy and full of zest, the slice pork is cook with ladies fingers, red chillies and whole shallots. I enjoy it as the vegetables are crunchy and well-coated in the home-made sauce. Maybe the next time I come back, I might have some seafood like prawn or squid with Nyonya sauce instead.

Homestyle Claypot Brinjal
RM 28 (L)

The first vegetable dish come along looking very unassuming and have everyone guessing what is it. Paul explain that it's a brinjal dish inspired from Temerloh, a small town in Pahang. Haha... probably lots of folks from Temerloh loves cooking this dish in their home.

May not be everyone favourite especially to those who don't like brinjal due to it's tasteless, soft and mushy texture. Anyway, chef cook it with minced prawns, pork and sweet pea together with shrimp paste (belacan) to enhance the flavour. I will say it's an okay dish if you are adventurous enough to try it!

Signature Potato Fried Pork
RM 25 (L)

Next, their Signature Potato Fried Pork is not too impressive with soggy thinly sliced fried potatoes and pork braised in a brown bland sauce. Still wondering why it's the restaurant's signature dish.

Stew Grouper Fish Head
RM 48 (L)

Last but the least is the Stew Grouper Fish Head dish served in claypot. Prepared and braised with loads of ingredients such as garlic, old ginger, red chillies, capsicum and soya sauce among others. Serve with tender and chunky meaty pieces of Grouper (Garupa) fish head, I find it a bit on the salty side, maybe you want to shake or leave off the sauce when eating this dish. Oh yah, just remember to remind the chef to go slow with the salt and soya sauce if you want to order this dish!

 Cantonese Style Hor Fun
RM 18 (L)

If you like noodles, Paul Tan recommended us to try their diners' all-time-favourite - Cantonese Style Hor Fun. For me, it's just an average 'ok' dish as I have tasted one of the best in town ie at the legendary Pan Heong Restaurant in Batu Caves. Well, I should not compare right; and foodies like me have a high benchmark for certain of dishes as we have tasted numerous others dishes in and around the Klang Valley!

Well, overall for me New Peng Wah is a place suited for home-cooked food lovers to dine. Their menu list is vast and varied where you can try many version of the dishes cook in different style. Steaming, shallow frying, stir frying, braising and deep frying are some of the cooking styles employed, and at New Peng Wah Restaurant, their chefs excel in preparing tasty home-style cooking dishes. My family and foodies friends enjoy ourselves thoroughly and I will definitely bring a couple of my close friends for a 2nd visit to taste the Claypot Hua Tiew Wine Chicken, Lala Soup and Nyonya sauce dishes.
