DIY Pizzas
To Please All Tastebuds

Raku Pizza, a newcomer to the pizza market offers healthy and fun alternatives to the regular fast food pizza experience. New kid from the block located at SS15, Subang Jaya and the brainchild of entrepreneur ~ Elaine Teh came up with this whole great idea of offering diners to build your own pizza's option with self-selection of the wholesome ingredients, make for a fun meal out for the whole family.

A avid cook and foodie herself, founder Elaine Teh wanted to combine the healthy fresh Japanese ingredients with the Italian-style of pizzas to develop her very own fusion pizza, giving a new twist to the traditional pizzas. Drawing inspiration from the vast Japanese food available, Elaine Teh has developed her own interpretation of fusion Japanese cuisine in Raku Pizza.

Build-Your-Own Pizza Concept Restaurant

The concept of ordering at Raku Pizza's is not unlike a fast-food joint. Diners place their orders at the counter, where the type of crust, pizza sauce flavours and toppings are available in the easy to read circular in shape menu. With endless possible variations, every family member will be satisfied.

Customisation is fun, you can make the pizza into what you want, whether it spicy, savoury, chessy -- whatever makes the diners happy!

An easy and simple, 3 steps to follow for you just build or construct your own masterpiece. Choose your own 8.5" crust from herb, charcoal or plain dough to selecting your 4 choices of sauce from miso, teriyaki, Japanese curry or wasabi mayonnaise. Proceed to the final step 3 of adding in your favourite toppings with more than 20 varieties of fresh ingredients to create your ultimate personalized pizza!

If you are totally lost or confused over the DIY selections, fret not as Raku Pizza also has a range of pre-made pizzas for you to choose from. So, Malaysian pizza-lovers, be prepared to tantalize your taste buds as Raku Pizza introduces new signature specialties featuring an exciting array of Raku Signature Pizzas from their HARU, NATSU, AKI and FUYU selections. These are categorized according to the type based sauce used such as Teriyaki sauce ~ HARU, Japanese Curry sauce ~ NATSU, Miso sauce ~ AKI and lastly, Wasabi Mayo sauce ~ FUYU.

Pre-Made Menu

Crowd favourites include the Tokyo Delight (NATSU) and Edo Samurai (AKI) but the Sakurajima LAVA (HARU) spelled perfection -- really yummy-licious!

Preparations are fast and easy too as diners placed their orders, the dough was first given a fresh coat of olive oil spread; followed by toppings before going into the '3 minutes' grilling oven to be cooked to perfection.

Tokyo Delight
RM 11.90

The Tokyo Delight, served with Japanese curry sauce is topped with with cheese, slices of boiled potatoes, sweet corns, drizzling of tasty mentai mayo and garnished with shredded seaweed for the final act.

This unassuming looking very simple but tasty curry sauce pizza was a real winner for that day. I least expected to be of anything but ordinary, and it proves otherwise. The combination of soft bland taste of the potatoes goes pretty well with the Japanese curry sauce and mentai mayo. The sweet corn and cheese goes hand in hand making it one of the simplest but nice tasting vegan pizza I ever tasted.

Sakurajima LAVA
RM 12.90

Next came the Sakurajima LAVA, a very mouth-watering looking charcoal pizza served with savoury base teriyaki sauce, topped with flavourful grilled chicken, sweet onions, cheese, shredded seaweed, drizzling of Japanese mayo with a melt-in-the-mouth onsen tamago (soft-boiled egg) right in the centre of the tasty pizza.

This time we had a tasting of the charcoal dough instead of the plain dough. The plain dough was delightfully crispy and light as compared the healthier version of the thicker charcoal dough.

Taste-wise was pretty good as the chunky grilled chicken goes well with the fragrant sweet onions. Creamy texture as you break open and spread the onsen tamago across the pizza before savouring it. Truly a good treat for those egg-lovers!

EDO Samurai
RM 12.90

Our last tasting of the pre-made signature pizza was the EDO Samurai from the AKI menu. A miso based pizza with toppings of Karaage chicken (deep fried chicken), sweet onion, cheese, bonito flakes, shredded seaweed and drizzled with okonomi sauce for the added flavour.

This version tasted just average for me as I prefer Sakurajima LAVA, the teriyaki sauce pizza with the grilled chicken to this miso sauce pizza with karaage chicken (deep fried chicken).

Auntie Lilly's Masterpiece

I also created my own masterpiece - Auntie Lilly's personal creation with my special choices of hot-picks of all my favourite fresh ingredients to go onto the charcoal dough. Top in the list was the soft shell crabs together with oyster mushroom, cheese, bonito flakes, shredded seaweed and final topping of nice-tasting wasabi mayo!

See the generous portion of the soft shell crab, bonito flakes and shredded seaweed, all three were a perfect combination, goes hand-in-hand complementary with each other. Sometimes you have to remember not to get greedy and choose one too many toppings for your DIY pizza, with some hits & misses you will soon figure out your perfect combination of the ultimate version to tantalize your taste buds.

Tama-Toji Chicken Katsu Don (M)
RM 11.90

Leading us off the pizza trails for a bit, Elaine has also prepared us some rice dishes from Raku Pizza's Donburi menu. Donburi is a Japanese 'rice bowl dish' and Raku Pizza has around 7 variations of chicken dishes served with rice for diners to choose from.

Tama-Toji Chicken Katsu Don, is basically crispy fried chicken fillet cooked with egg and onions with in-house special sauce served on top of the rice. Big eaters can opt for large (L) serving instead of the medium (M) serving, paying an extra of RM 3 for extra chicken and rice. For me, the medium serving is good enough for an average eater like me especially with the generous portion of the chicken fillet.

Teriyaki Chicken Rice (M)
RM 11.90

I loved teriyaki chicken, the sweet-savoury taste of the teriyaki sauce whether eaten with rice, suchi or ramen. So it won't do me justice if I have not tasted Raku Pizza's version of  Teriyaki Chicken Rice.

The Teriyaki Chicken Rice is easily a favourite as it is the familiar Japanese-style dish. Generous portion of the well-marinated grilled chicken thigh served with sweet, savoury teriyaki sauce, sprinkled with sesame and shredded cabbage/carrots on the side with sticky rice.

Shredded Cabbage & Carrots Salad

Rice

I would have prefer to have my donburi dishes with the short-grain Japanese rice as it quite  different from the jasmine rice served in Raku Pizza. You see, having right texture, glossy and sticky Japanese rice add-ons to the authenticity of the rice dish served.

Wafu Yuzu Wakame Udon
RM 9.90

Apart from the fusion Japanese pizza and donburi, Raku Pizza also offers comfort Japanese food such as udon. You can choose from a wide array of udon dishes such as Onsen Tamago Udon, Chicken Katsu Udon, Wafu Curry Chicken Udon to Wafu Yuzu Wakame Udon, Wafu Curry Prawn Katsu Udon, Kitsune Udon and so forth.

We had Wafu Yuzu Wakame Udon, something different for the norm with recommendation for Elaine. Udon noodles served in traditional dashi broth with sourish citrus sauce topped with fresh seaweed. I have never tried yuzu wakame udon and did not know what to expect. The dish was a bit bland for my liking, with a mild sourish citrus flavour but the udon noodles was done just right.

Pika-Pika Dessert Pizza
RM 12.90

As for desserts, we ended our meal with one of Raku Signature pizza called Pika-Pika Dessert Pizza - an artisan dessert starting with some pineapples cubes and sweet corn toppings on a plain dough and drizzled with house made caramel sauce. It was indeed a sweet ending to our appetising fusion meal at Raku Pizza that day :-)

All in all, Raku Pizza is a good place to check out if you are looking for new fusion food to try out. Fans of Japanese cuisine are pretty spoilt for choice these days, but sometimes going off the usual traditional dishes can lead to a new and exciting gastronomic adventure at Raku Pizza. Do drop by if you are around the vicinity, prices are very affordable as they mostly catered to the budget-concious Inti and Taylor's college students patronizing the restaurant.
